Service call alone is like $250, plus whatever else they have to do

How did he determine that it was a $300 job?. He should have received an invoice with a breakdown of what was done and the cost. If it was a $300 job, what was the other $400 for on the invoice?.

Some think that good mechanics come cheap, like working on the side of the road free.

I would guess since it was a mobile repair service he was broke down somewhere. I would expect to see a callout charge for that. As someone who does heavy equipment field repair I can definitely tell you it is not even close to working in a nice, heated shop. Some days its downright miserable having to lay in a muddy ditch in a rainstorm for a couple hours to fix something. Part of the reason field repair costs more.

You can always shop around for a service mechanic in a big place like Montreal. I had a Hanger bearing let go a few years ago in the GTA and I had guys tell me I needed a heavy and get it towed to a shop to as little as I'll be there in an hour to get you going again with a 3/8 socket kit.

At the end of the day, I found a guy with reasonable rates to come and swap it out in a parking lot and I even gave him a hand in getting the yoke off.
