Hello all - I'm a newbie to these forums, although not to trucking; apologies in advance if I'm not using the proper forum. I am wondering who in the fuel tanker world pays the best? I am recently arrived in So Cal, have over three years experience hauling local hazmat (welding gases), and so far have found Keenan Advantage, Cox Petroleum, and Pacific Tank Lines as a few of the major fuel haulers near me. I know from lurking here that the major oil companies are the best folks to work for, but I'm going on the assumption that I might not get on with them as I have less than five years' experience. Any idea what these three (or others anyone can think of) pay per hour? Thanks in advance --

I have seen there ads in newspapers. They range from 60 to70K a year. I don't know if they are telling the truth or not. I have never worked for one or know anyone who has. All you can do is call. I am sure you will start out working nights and weekends. If thats not a problem, go for it.

Many tanker companies only require 2 years driving experience , especially if they need drivers and you have HAZMAT

Yeah I figure the nights/weekends thing is pretty much a given, but I can live with that. Thanks for the responses...

Is it normal for a company to ask you to sign a contract for 2 years? Pacific tank lines is asking my husband to do this and it sounds shady but I'm not really familiar with the protocol. What's the word??

I cannot answer your question but maybe you can help me.

I am considering applying for a job with Pacific Tank Lines. Do they pay by the hour? How much per hour? Are there different pay rates for drive time and load/unload time? Do they work 5 on 2 off or 6 on 3 off? What facility is your husband applying at? I heard they have several facilities in SoCal.

Does your husband have prior hazmat tanker experience? I have 5 years local Ltl exp but no hazmat tanker experience. Just got my hazmat and tank endorsements.

I appreciate any answers you can provide me.

I know if you go through a recruiter agency like centerline, they will have a ton of different people they hire for, but will start around 16 - 18 an hour. Hope that helps.

I called and inquired about a job posting in Los Angeles for a fuel carrier job. I was told that they offered a mileage rate that varies between 40cpm and $3 + per mile. Obviously any out of town deliveries would pay the 40 cpm, deliveries within LA pay closer to the $3 per mile. They said they deliver up to a max of 150 miles from the port of LA. They pay $12 flat rate for each time you load, unload, pre-trip, post-trip, and $15 for every 30 minutes you wait at the rack (after the first hour).

Is this common? Is this a average pay rate in Los Angeles?
Looks like the days of being paid per hour may be over (except for union jobs).
