Man that's rough. Sorry for your loss.

In trucking you can't expect anyone to help you. I would have asked for a load going home immediately and if they couldn't get one I'd tell them where the truck would be, then taxi/uber to an airport/bus station. Unfortunately you'd need some money saved up to do that.

Most trucking companies play the ZIP to ZIP scam, this isn't unique to Swift. Some pay household movers miles which is even worse.

There use to be a separate odometer on the drive axle. That is how you were paid.

Fort Wayne, IN to Toledo, OH. Fort Wayne, IN to Chicago, IL. Fort Wayne, In to Columbus, OH. There are a lot of places not near an interstate highway but easily accessible via US highways or state roads. A lot of US highways are 4 or 6 lanes wide these days.

If they did that I'd imagine drivers would abuse it by driving around on purpose. They should just pay based on Mapquest miles.

we used to have hub metersand recorded the mileage at each stop.it was probably for state tax purposes.
we always haul our loads asap and give the truck to the night shift and go home.
today we record mileage off the dashboard

But they have either a lot of stop lights or increased patrols.

I have worked for Swift for 5 months and this has been my EXACT experience. From my Driver Manager to other "support" staff and management, there has never been a time when I felt like they had my back. I have put in for "home time" twice now, promised that it would not be a problem, and twice been screwed.

Even though I have requested it only twice, I HAVE NEVER HAD HOME TIME. I have been on the road since being hired.

I have sat for days waiting for a load. To be fair, the planners have for the most part been willing to try and help, but many times in my short time with Swift I have been given ridiculously-short trips or waited for a day or more.

I have spent too many days to count working for Swift for less than $50. That is a fact. If you need a steady reliable income, avoid Swift.

Swift operations have proven themselves time and time again to be lazy and dumb. Again, my driver manager is beyond incompetent. Nasty, condescending, uncaring, and completely inept.

I am reviewing my options right now, but I do think that unless things improve dramatically, at the least I will file a DOT complaint for a "hostile work environment". I firmly believe that Swift's operations staff has created an unsafe environment for me as an OTR driver.

I won't even get into the spy camera that records you without warning for no reason... At least 3 times I have been filmed without my knowledge, only to find out after the fact that this video had been saved and viewed by others. Again, if this isn't the definition of "hostile work environment", I can't help you.

    Bottom line...?

    Avoid Swift.
