Must be the guy the news interviewed in the florida protests admitting to pulling freight for .83/mi. Now wants to know what the smart ones are pulling for.... and needing proof.

When you come into this business planning to work the leftover market, what do you expect.
I don't understand with all the business news available and most people advising this is a bad time to come into the trucking business
People are still dead set on jumping in.
Post like this should raise questions yet every week more and more announce their plan to buy a truck jump in. More planning and studying before jumping in could save a lot of heartache.
My advice to the op is figure out how the spot market works, then find new sources of freight to move away from the spot market. Ther is still plenty of good freight out there but you have to be a smart enough to find it, then be able to provide what the shipper wants.
Quality service with good clean equipment and drivers,
The idea than you can just run the load boards and haul top dollar freight is not going to happen,

Dry van freight on the west coast that loads out of WA/OR going to L.A. don't come close to $2.00 a mile.

That lane has been totally raped for years.

I have a friend that has worked in logistics for years. She used to book loads for Fedex years ago. She told me on Friday that they called her and offered her several loads out of Portland to L.A. for $900 a load. I had a broker offer me a load the other day from Portland to Gardena, CA for $850. I laughed.

Sad thing is someone took those loads.

Here's a snippet of available posted dry van (with rate listed) freight for tomorrow Portland, OR area to California. These posted Springfield, OR to Visalia, CA loads are paying $550 for 685 loaded miles. You do the math ;-) load board.JPG

Simple, you don't take those loads. The bottom feeders need to get loads somewhere. If it were not for these loads they would be more likely to find the higher paying loads. But because they do not have the time to locate them many are safe with their customers.

These low rates are where you see lease/owner operators cycle through time and again with failure after failure because they just cannot figure it out. Hey if I am going to lose money on this run I want a 3k mile run. If you are going to lose then go big with those big miles... LOL Things ARE cheaper in bulk are they not?

As for sharing, do you share your wife or girlfriend? Ok some do but that is another thing all together... LOL

Someone said it is a dog eat dog world out there and you have to protect what is yours. You will not always be able to but you don't just hand someone the key to your house.

Its not a dog eat dog world in trucking when the brokers & big trucking companies guys aka d o t set the rules out here for us small guys.... you do what they say move the cheap loads are starve... that bull about you guys getting 2 3 4 $ mile runs now days.... these brokers and shippers have access to thousands of carriers they can get the same job done better and for less put money in there pockets...LIKE I SAID SHOW THE RATE CONS..

Big companies and DOT have been setting the rules for decades and yet the small guy still survives. When someone ties your hands you learn to do it with your feet or you find a way to cut the bonds. Everyone on elogs... no problem, you get better at logistics, you provide a better and valued service. Yeah someone will come along and cut your rates but they will not be around long. You want to make good money? You find something that no one else wants to do.

You can keep your head in the sand or your ###, whichever it may be, if you want to. Those rates are out there. It takes work to find them because they never hit the boards.
