I'm strongly considering operating digital modes on my home station remotely using my android tablet. I usually have an hour or two to kill while getting unloaded every day and that might be fun.

    darthanubis Thanks this.

The "screwdriver" style antennas are remotely tuned antennas, and don't use an external tuner.

Extra class here. I run an old Yaesu FT-100 with an ATAS-100 on the mirror. It does a passable job on 10-20, and acts like a quarter wave on 6.

Over of the nice things about running a radio with good filtering on the receiver is that it completely ignores those splatter boxes that like to blather on channel 19. You know, the ones that like to announce their underwear selection, out rather the lack thereof...

Nice. Always wondered how well the atas line performed in a big truck.

I won't buy another one. The next screwdriver antenna I'll buy will likely be the small Tarheel.

According to K0BG (his site, k0bg.com is an awesome mobile HF resource):

"In fact, the Yaesu ATAS antenna is the least efficient, remotely controllable, HF mobile antenna, money can buy!"

I asked about tuner because that Tarheel will not autotune to your rig. Of course the yaesu atas 100 will auto tune to the yaesu rig. I'm running the ft857d with the atas120a. If I go with a non atas screwdriver I will need to manually adjust the screwdriver or use a tuner, right?

And why did you mention receiver filter ability with 11 meter splatter boxes and 10-20 meter rigs? Well, I guess some of those 10 meter rigs have had a golden screwdriver in them. I've yet to make a 10 meter contact, mostly 40m.
