I did line haul only for the Hound. But sometimes I was "forced" onto a charter. I.E. the senior guys did not want it!
They were a blast! The tour guides rocked and I was gaureenteed at least $2 a seat per day in tips. 55 seats times $2 is $110 plus hourly charter wages.

Peteseymour reminded me of a charter that went up to Gold Bridge B.C. I dropped the German Tourists off at the lodge and the tour guide gave me directions back to Whistler that would save me over a hour. It turned out to be a friggen logging road that I had to use the granny gear down many mountains! I spent all afternoon going through switch backs. Plus I managed to put a tiny hole in a radiator pipe. I wrapped it with duct tape. I was totally lost and finally popped out onto the pavement around Pemberton if I remember. Where they filmed Rambo 1!

I agree with all the posters here. Getting a P endorsement is different. I do not have the school bus.

    Hi Dog-c!
Well way back when when I was with the Hound they had it timed to where at each stop you would have just enough time to unload passengers. Unload freight and baggage. Sell or collect tickets. Reload freight and baggage. Round up all the people that were on a meal break or smoke break. You would be surprised at how many drivers just leave people behind because they can"t get back to the bus after a 10 or 30 minute break.

So if the schedule falls behind it snowballs and makes problems all the way down the line. It messes up the connections. Sort of like the airlines. But I totally understand what you mean.

Great thread, and one of the first I've seen here about bus driving.

I was offered a city bus driving job in Phoenix, AZ. I was pretty stoked about it until I went on YouTube to find some videos about the pre-trip inspection for a bus since I don't have the P endorsement. What came up were literally hundreds of videos, both from the on-board cameras and TV news stories, of bus drivers getting assaulted by passengers. That turned me right off to the idea and I decided to pass on the job.

If it were a rare, random occurrence, I could say, "well, the chance of that happening to me is pretty slim", but it's not. There seems to be multiple incidents happening around the country every month.

Don't believe me? Here is a link to all the videos: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bus+driver+assaults

I guess with driving a city bus, you never know who your next passenger is going to be. High on drugs, drunk out of their mind, mentally unstable, or a combination of all three. It's not worth the potential to be beaten, or perhaps even stabbed or shot.
