    I'm not sure your understanding the concept, or very possibly I misunderstand your post. The 3" spring has added to the length of your antenna. Length is what adjusts the SWR... thus your antenna may be too long. By removing the spring and checking the SWR again it will give you an idea of a baseline (hopefully 2.5:1 or less) then place your same spring back and you can adjust the antenna down to that baseline or possibly less (Even though the antenna may not appear to be adjustable) we can walk you through that process.
