I have a 2008 Volvo 780 and the inter wheel differential lock light (two wheels with an x in-between them) randomly flashes in the instrument cluster and then goes away. However I only have a inter axle differential lock switch in my truck and no inter wheel switch. Any ideas on what this flashing light might mean?

Hi, on Volvo truck (version 2 means since October 2002) the Inter axle signal for the light in the cluster is come from the inter axle switch in the dash, when the switch is ON the light in the cluster come ON (solid).
For the Inter Wheel the signal for the dash light is come from the mechanical switch threaded close to the air cylinder on the rear housing (1 or 2) 3/4 lock = 1 housing, Full Lock - 2 housing.
Per conception of the cluster the light in the cluster display can only flash when it is ON.
The inter wheel switches send a ground signal to the cluster when engage via wire 426 (by memory) in your case if your truck is not equipped with inter wheel lock and the inter wheel light flash sometime, i'm suspecting you have a wire problem or corrosion problem on that circuit, check for harness with plastic plug close the side of the transmission, check if a harness cap plug is missing or for corrosion in the harness plug not used .
Note: The inter wheel circuit on the chassis is very very sensitive to moisture and corrosion (high resistance can start the inter wheel light to flash in the cluster) because the cluster use LED system.
    Let me know your find.
    Ben

Once I had the light come on dimly, the connector broke on the switch on the axle so water had gotten into the electrical connector grounding out the light so it came on.

Why not?? Having the interlock locked on dry pavement dosent hurt anything.

Burn it right up that's why. When you make turns and curves with it, you stress everything. It's only made for ice, snow and things of that nature.

Anyone willing to take a swing?

Have you rebuild one before or know how they work?? Driving on snow/ice really isnt any different then dry pavement as far as the differential is conserned.
