Well, learn something new every year. The two are so often hand in hand, I didn't realize that was a thing.

I got my class A with a Chevy 3500 one ton & 40' gooseneck without air brakes. It didn't have an air brake endorsement, but when I got back into a big truck two years later, I just took the test for air brakes & added the endorsement on to the class A CDL. :dontknow:

Hi, I have been hot shot driving for 6 month's now and here is what you will need: You will need a medical card, you will need to get a DOT number and a MC number and then you will need to get your Authority from the Government. You will also need to file a BOC-3. There are plenty of sites online that will help you acquire these things the cost will be around $1,200 for everything. The insurance is redicuilous and will run you up to $10,000. You only need an operators license as long as you do not go over 26000 lbs. combined weight of the truck and trailer this is why you need to stick with a 3500 diesel and no bigger. There is plenty of work out there so don't be discouraged by some of these clowns they just do want you in the business.Remember combined weight can not exceed 26,000 if you don't have a class A CDL! Good luck. Dan

A 6 month wonder in another 6 months it will sink in how little money you make. You neglected to tell about the 2-3 K down for insurance and monthly payments of 500-600 or the cost of load securing equipment of around 1500 to 3000 dollars. Or that if you wind up heavy your equipment can be put OOS if you don't have a CDL.
Let's not forget the cost of the truck and trailer. Yeah right there's big money to be made at a dollar or maybe more a mile. There's plenty of cheap freight to haul that will have you making less than a wal mart greeter.

Something you forgot to mention. If your trailer GVW is 10,001 lbs, or more, many, if not all states will require you to have a CDL A license also.

I know a few guys who have done well running under 26,001 GVW also. Congratulations on your success. I hope you continue to do well.

To the OP, hauling the livestock trailers privately is a big difference (legally speaking) than hauling a 40 ft goosneck, commercially, across state lines.

Also the 26k limit is not just actual weight but rated weight. If your truck and trailer GVWRs added together are over 26k you need a class A CDL. My dually has a GVWR of 13,025 so even with a 14k rated trailer empty I need a class A.

Also with a vehicle over 26k you will need IFTA and apportioned plates if you plan to cross state lines.

Depends it on what day it is. Here they go by plated weight, but they could try something else depending on how low their money light is. I was around before cdl's and wonder how we survived all those years before the government thought them up? They can't force you to plate over 26K unless you want to but I've heard of a couple places trying to enforce the cdl crap before.
