If anyone is familiar with our predicament.. Husband needs a CDL class B in order to keep his current job... we have been kinda rushed... a school bus company has trained him (he has no need to drive school bus but this is what he'll be tested on).... his test was for the 24th .... but it was the 1st day of school.. so they had to cancel.. now it's in 3 days....he's feeling stressed... We took pictures today so he's prepared for what is under the hood.. since he has to dictate every little thing..not cracked broken, secure to the engine sort of thing......

The lady teaching him was not as familiar with some of this as their mechanic, she got her CDL 30 yrs ago.. we know how that was (you didn't have to know crock!)...the mechanic was too busy...

My question is..what is the silver thing on the right of the picture...with red , green & yellow hoses coming from it.... (I realize how dumb this sounds)...

Can someone please explain.. He's been watching You tube videos.. I just want the quickest answer we can find.. don't want him to fail...

The silver thing looks like the treadle valve. It's basically what the brake pedal in the cab attaches to.

The yellow cap with the T handle is indeed the engine oil dipstick.

He really needs to calm down. The stress is going to cause more problems than anything. I was stressed out during my road test, which caused me to rush and actually fall off the back of the truck. The more calm and relaxed he can be during the test, the better.

    Brake valve

    Yes

If it has auto trans it's for the trans fluid

Was he not given a guide book for all these elements?

Try this video. It's for my local test, but it goes over as much of the equipment as I was able to find on Youtube:

In many instances the tester will allow a driver to do one side of a truck, then on the other side just point out things that need to be checked that are different on that side. But if they happen to miss something on the primary side of the truck, then say they will check it the same on the backside, they will loose the points for every instance of that part.
For example. When checking the wheels. You check pressure, tire tread, lug nuts (for tightness, just use hand and look for rust that may show it is loose), check for hub oil etc. If you happen to miss the lug nuts, they can take the points for all of them. Same with tread depth, etc. So make sure you really make sure you hit the items that are repeated or they add up fast.
The pre-trip is not hard, and it is easier on a class B truck or bus, since it is just one unit. Take your time and you will pass. Really take the time to learn the Air brake test part of the pre-trip. This fails allot of people, they get scared and forget steps.

Just curious if his current job requires him to be able to drive a standard shift transmission or exclusively automatics? I ask because if the bus is an automatic he'll have a restriction on his CDL...restricted to only automatic transmission trucks..Just trying to save you all some heartache down the road if he didn't know already. I realize he has to get what he can but in the Class B world, 10 wheel dumps etc he'll be limited on jobs.
My point is..too bad he didn't find a standard shift truck to test on.

As a class B holder...32 years now, I know, and can identify any part, system or component on what I drive..However you are right about not knowing jack about the required procedure to satisfy the tester.
Meaning I may not do it in the proper sequence of how they want it done.

The thing with all the air lines coming out of it is the brake treadle valve. There's a rod that goes to it from the brake pedal and sends air to the brakes. Unless something has changed since I took my test, you need not mention it other than the general checking for leaks. Where all the fluid check points are, you will need to know. When I took my test the instructor wanted me to touch everything I was required to check, other than things like 5th wheel jaws that are all greasy.

I've worked on trucks all my life. When I took my CDL test (a long time ago) I didn't study a bit for my pre-trip. I just went down the truck naming every part I saw. It took forever and I could tell the instructor was getting tired of it but I didn't miss a thing. I did name a bunch of stuff that isn't on the test but there is no penalty for naming too much.

Having been around trucks all my life, the CDL test was a piece of cake to me. I can't imagine how overwhelming it can be to somebody that has never opened to hood on a truck.
