On the spread neither axle can be over 20,000 lbs. If you just weigh them together you don't know each axle and one could be more for whatever technical reason one of the smarter members can explain. I'd rather be positive i'm good to go.

No one has mentioned the brain dead driver behind you pulling on the scale when you're pulling forward to split your trailer axles.

Surprisingly it hasn't happened yet. I do watch for it though. Worst I've had is a driver walking across the back of the scale.

Fair enough. As I said it hasn't been brought up, but I will make an effort to learn how. Thanks

Georgia does weigh individual axles in a group and my son got the ticket. Several states do that. Like other weights, they usually won't bother with you unless you're far enough out of whack for the fine to matter.

Mine was on a regular closed tandem air ride on an old Trailmobile reefer, but had one oddball air spring that was bigger in diameter than the other three. A shop I quit using long ago, after this and other issues, told me it was a good substitute and not to worry about it.

Turns out the "heavy" axle was the one with that oddball spring. Everything else was in working condition, so the extra surface area in that one had to have been bearing more weight. I had been meaning to change that one anyway, as it was a little too close to the inside tire for comfort. So I changed them all, since they were looking sketchy anyway. Both axles checked out equal on a farm scale a while later.

Im trying to understand, maximum legal weight on single axle is 20000 lbs on mostly all the states, why would anybody bother with scaling each axle on a tandem?

On a tandem, especially a spring ride Reyco tandem, I'd have to call that a fairly unlikely possibility. :)

Each state has different limits when it comes to spread axles, tandems, tridems etc. Most states on a tandem axle group with a divisible load you are limited to 34,000lbs, or 17,000lbs per axle in that group. Most states you can go to 40,000lbs on the group or 20,000lbs per axle with a non divisible load permit. Some also require that each axle load distribution within 8%-10% plus or minus of each axle in that group.

Splitting tandems allows you to check individual weights for non divisible overweight loads, as well as verifying proper distribution of air bags and leveling valves or after accidents and rebuilding of frame/suspension/axles that may have been bent or damaged.
