Lol....it's true Streetbeater. The place is one of the Gerdau Ameristeel plants. The one in Cartersville, GA has you go set in a chair in a box built out of steel, painted yellow, near the shipping dock. Reminds one of a hockey penalty box. At least it has a chair and a fan blowing on you. All in the name of safety.

They happen because of miscommunication and incidents happening.
While at my last company there was a worker who got light injuries because a driver pulled away from the dock due to the "green light" which was really because the lock didn't work right or latch onto the bumper. Employee wasn't done unloading and was going in the truck as the driver pulled away. Luckily driver spotted him going in at the last minute and stopped with the quickness. Forklift came off the dock and got wedged.
In another department I've heard of some people falling off loading the flatbeds some company, some drivers so they instituted fall prevention for all involved.
Company went plant wide with the key boxes, chalks, driver being out of the cab. I can see why other places went with unhooking from the trailer. End of the day we all want the same thing. To go home safe. Which is why the statistics juggle the policy safety protocol. Sucks but it is what it is.x1Heavy, texasbbqbest and DDlighttruck Thank this. -
Cargill Salt down I-80 from Tooele, has a rule that says you can't climb on anything more than 48" off the ground. I found this out when I climbed into the trailer to do a quick sweep. One of the workers came to me and said "Someone saw you climb in your trailer. I measured it and it's below 48". Otherwise we would have to fill out a report." And I'm thinking, "You have to be friggin kidding me." I didn't measure it so I don't know if he shaved a few inches off to save the paperwork hassle, but jeez.
x1Heavy and carramrod32 Thank this. -
They have two mills in Michigan I have been to. One requires a chin strap on your hard hat. The other never mentions it.
At least they provide a strap for you. -
Yeah, those Ameristeel plants all require chinstraps also. It is at least getting easier to find chinstraps for sale. Used to be difficult to find them.

How the stuff was order is not my issue I could care less; it's not my business. The shipper made an agreement with the grocer and hired out a truckload service. They pay for a truckload service. Which means transportation only. Loading and unloading is the responsibly of the shipper and consignee. That means the dock workers that landed the cushy union jobs at the grocery warehouse need to earn their keep and unload the truck.
The whole deal with lumpers are they are a workaround for union rules. The shipper wants a cheap truckload service instead of hiring a LTL company to unload the freight. Dock workers want a cushy job that doesn't get their hands dirty. Union wants all the workers on the dock to be in the union. Grocery company doesn't want the union or union workers; they want mexican immigrants so they can cheat them out of every cent they can. The truckload company just wants to collect money and doesn't care how much a drivers time is wasted. To keep this whole scam going the trucker gets to waste his time bankrolling the lumpers as subcontractors of the trucking company. That way everybody else gets what they want, and the driver's time is free, subsidizing the whole scam. -
Dispatch used to give me a hard time hiring lumpers at 95.00
That was 20 years ago.
Someone explain to me how the Dispatcher, Driver and the Industry in general rolled over and now hand over 300 freaking dollars to lump a trailer???? Tell me that.dog-c and Toomanybikes Thank this. -
