So very true! What kind of a life can it be without risk? Each to their own I guess. I can not see the attraction that this program has now that I know the headaches, heartaches, and stress involved. There are so many better ways to be in business yourself than transportation.
Yet the waiting lists stay full and people keep coming. You never know til you try it, but Choice continues to a bigger challenge than it was in the beginning.Home_on_wheels Thanks this. -
I will be honest, I am seriously considering this program. I understand the chance I would take, but as long as the opportunity is there, I know I would be successful. By successful, I mean put more money into my pocket each week. I know I would not get rich.
My options are limited. I am trained to do three things. Military, Law Enforcement, or drive. I retired from the military and no longer want to do LE, so that leaves driving. In my situation, I can’t afford to take the time to find a different career field. I won’t get into the details, but I drive because it is the best paying job I can find. There literally is very little where I live without extensive (Masters or higher) education or experience in that field…or both.
Now, being a company driver isn’t a bad deal. It’s actually very easy. All I have to do is get freight from point A to point B within the allotted time frame and do it safely. There are, of course, other things, but that’s the basic idea. The problem is, in my situation, what I earn is what it takes for my family to survive, and we don’t live an extravagant life. In fact, we have cut way back on almost everything. We have a nice but modest home, modest vehicles, and my family does very little. I make good where I am, but it just isn’t enough to save for much. This is why I mentioned earlier the Lease program could be a great thing for me…or it could be a disaster. I realize the risks, but if I avoid them the payoff at the end could be of great benefit. I may then be in a position to actually purchase my own truck and make even more money. Or, I may fail miserably and go back to being a company driver.
The point is the only way I will ever know if I can make it as a business owner is with a program such as this. It isn’t ideal, but neither is life. Unless another company provides a better program, which I have yet to find, if I do go this route it will be with SNI. What I find strange is when people ask about what the best programs are, every seems to mainly mention how difficult the programs will be and not which ones actually work the best. I find that odd.
The only other option is to find a better paying company that doesn’t work me to death. I would do flat bed, which is what I really wanted, but I have an issue with my back. The last time it went out, I had picked up a jar of salsa…a freaking jar of salsa…at the grocery store. Thanks Marine Corps. The elderly couple behind us in line didn’t enjoy the unintended language which spewed from my mouth. I didn’t mean to, but hey, I did spend a career in the Marines. It happens sometimes. Anyway, the last thing I need is to be on top of a load, back go out, roll off and kill myself. I rarely have to touch the freight where I am, which works well for me.
The other thing is, I drive team. I have had the same co-driver for two years. He’s a good guy and a good driver, but I am sort of wanting to, oh I don’t know, actually get some sleep now and again. That is difficult when the truck is always moving.
Anywho, I just really am looking for something to provide an avenue to do more, make more, and provide more for my family rather than spin wheels in the mud and never get anywhere.alpha beta, TennMan and drvrtech77 Thank this. -
The program is doable.
Don't be discouraged bur also don't buy into the ease of doing it, that we may sometimes post.
Good luck.freightwipper, alpha beta and Hamburger71 Thank this. -
That is one of the biggest misconceptions that a lot of these company drivers have that this program is very easy just pick your loads and run... There's a whole lot more to it than just thatredoctober83, alpha beta, TennMan and 1 other person Thank this.

I realize there is a lot more to it than just driving. I may not understand all that is involved, but I get fuel is a major concern. As it stands now, most of our drivers have mandatory fuel spots, but we have been given a little movement because in the past we have saved them some money of fuel costs by getting it at a different place, running the miles in the more expensive areas, and then topping off in the cheaper areas. The only reason we started doing this is our fuel sensor/gauge/entire system stopped working. Instead of putting the truck down for who knows how long, we just keep up with the miles and fuel consumption and fuel where we need. We also now have to keep in mind weather and terrain. I am sure there is a lot more involved, but as long as I know what I need to do, it will get done. It’s the lack of knowing which I think will hurt.
I don’t mind the planning, crunching numbers, and thinking things through, as long as the payoff is worth the headache. As I understand it, the best overall paying loads are in the Midwest areas. We used to run through there all the time and I really enjoy driving there, even in the winter. I know a lot of folks avoid that area during winter, but it doesn’t bother me. If you see me getting off and stopping, you probably should do the same, lol.
If anyone is willing and has the time, please message me with specific details of how it all works, mistakes to avoid, things I may not think about I should be doing (ex: type of computer and where there will be wifi access, etc), or whatever you think will help. I haven’t posted much in the last two years, but I have been keeping an eye on things so I know stuff has changed a little during that time frame.
