Caltrans Rest Area Usage Policy
The Department of Transportation's Rest Areas are a stopping place for your relaxation. Please help us keep them pleasant by using them as they are intended and by being considerate of others.
Remember, by staying too long, you will be in the way of someone else who needs to stop. Thank you for your cooperation.
You May:
- Park in any designated parking place
- Stay up to 8 hours in any 24 hour period.
- Walk your pet, as long as it is on a leash.
- Place your litter only in trash receptacles.
- Dump sanitary wastes from RV holding tanks and portable devices at designated dump stations.
- Use small stoves and heaters (except on wood tables) if you do it safely.
- Engage in some nonprofit activities, with The Department of Transportation's
- permission. (The Department's permission does not indicate sponsorship).
- Block vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
- Camp or pitch a tent.
- Park, to do something away from the rest area such as hike, camp or hunt.
- Use a megaphone, loudspeaker or other sound amplifying device.
- Use The Department of Transportation's water, electricity or gas for unauthorized use.
- Sell or publicize your private goods or services.
- Put anything on walls or plants.
ps: REALLY seems like these places limit for 8, knowing "WE" need a ten, and can't stay safely or legally. And to think it's an election year....really?!?Last edited: Aug 14, 2016

Myself, I recall, being awoken one morning in a Rest Stop by a Virginia State Trooper, parking area was full. Myself, i parked in a line behind other semi trucks, while the Trooper was writing the ticket, walked away & informed other parked truckers, walked back over to the Trooper, wanting to demonstrate that i've learned by mistake, (in hopes to rcvg a warning) Informed the Trooper, that i promoted the awareness to the Other Truckers, notified drivers of their error. communicated in a language which was understood, where the drivers began moving out. i just wanted to give reassurance that learned from my mistake. yepperAnother Canadian driver, Roteck, Giuseppe Ventolucci and 3 others Thank this. -

I was once booted by a trooper from a PA turnpike service plaza during a snowstorm. The place was full due to white out conditions and hazardous roadways so I parked along the curb (not blocking traffic or anyone else). Trooper knocked my door and said I had to go because I wasn't in a designated spot. I tried to explain that I didn't feel safe with the current weather conditions. He didn't care. Gave me 10 min to leave before he wrote a ticket and called a tow truck. So I left. Went about 15 mph to the next exit (exits are a long way apart on the turnpike) and parked behind a grocery store for the rest of the night.

And He'd "Wait" there 10 minutes to make sure you leave instead of possibly doing other things, Like assisting that 1st spin-out or jackknife.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
