Its been quite a ride. I really enjoy working for Schneider. Their orientation and training was adequate but not overdone. I like the fact that they gave me the keys and just kept the loads coming. I've made decent money for a beginner, much better than my E-1 pay in the Army and I'm not even being shot at. To be honest I'm making more than when I was an E-4 except when I was getting deployment pay. Even though I have been a day or two late for hometime, I really feel like my DBL works her butt off to try to get me home.
I love the truck I was assigned. It runs great and I never have to worry about not passing a DOT inspection. Had to laugh at all those bailing wire and bubblegum trucks pulled over and delayed in Laredo. Felt real proud when my truck passed and the officer told me nice truck.
I was really surprised by my DBL's understanding of my family situation. I'm gonna be a single dad soon and will need to go on a dedicated route. Not only did Holly find a position in the Dallas area, I can start the route September first. Plenty of time before I go to court for custody of my son. Right now both my kids are with my mom who lives near San Antonio, and Holly makes sure I get my time off down there instead of Dallas right now.
Overall I'm very happy with my new career and I'm glad I chose Schneider to work for after CDL school.
