The 5th wheel is positioned directly over the rear drive axle so there is plenty of room.

I just got a ticket for being over 41' KP to mid of rear axles. The ticket is $100, not a big deal but I've learned important thing.

Even with tandems closed you are allowed to have up to 44k lbs on your rear axles. That's what the officer explained to me.

So, if you're 53' trailer, don't be over 41' from KP to the middle of rear axles but you may carry up to 44k lbs even on the closed tandems.

The officer also explained that the one trip permit could be purchased for $10 or annual permit for $30.

Now I'm wondering: does the similar regulations apply to CA and CT? Can you haul over 34k on the closed tandems?

Not sure on CT but CA ..... no and you cannot permit the KP to rear axle overlength on a divisible load. The 44K IN FL is because on the spread they treat it as 2 seperate axles (that is why the spread is > 10')

    Not just in FL.

But the real Q here is does FL allow 44K with the spread closed? I say the cop was FOS.

Without permit!! Don't have it in writing but the officer showed me Truck Atlas or something like that where this regulation is stated. I'll check the law quotation and will let you know.
