I have what you prefer to the ball type style for over 30 years and I bought them used from a friend that retired. Even my chains and I will say this, they don't make that kind of quality today like they did back then.johnboy023 Thanks this.

I've been wanting to get 6 or so of them yellow quickbinders. The ones that have the folding handle. I found a beat up and bad rusted one poking out of a snowbank last year. Took it home and did some surgery on it. Now it's the first one I grab. They store really nice with the handle folded. The threads have a stopper of some kind inside so that they can't unscrew themselves. You can hang them up anywhere you'd put a snap binder and not have them rattle apart.

Are those the ones with the offset ratchet?
johnboy023 Thanks this. -
The only drawback is opposite of the handle there is a pointy piece that sticks out where it goes around the teeth. If your building a bulkhead or something with the ratchet laying flat on top it scrapes going around. Gets annoying.Riprap, johnboy023 and DDlighttruck Thank this. -
Put a small piece of 2x4 under one end of the ratchet and that will not happen.Old Iron Thanks this.

I had to buy a couple snap binders last year and they were about $40 a piece.

^What he said. I use a small chunk of 4x4 and put it under one of the hooks. once the chain starts to tighten up the block will keep that side of the chain from twisting.

Seems like a lot of work. Isn't it easier just to use the snap binder for this particular load ?johnboy023 Thanks this.

I guess you could say that any time a ratchet binder is used. I prefer ratchet binders for most things over snap binders. I can get them much tighter.Diesel Dave Thanks this.
