I wondered what answers people have for some typical questions. One I've heard come up before is 'How long will I stay with the company'?

In my case, I left trucking to try college. I learned a lot of cool computer stuff and I'm interested in programming, but I'm getting out of college to work, catch up on bills, and rebuild some savings. I'm not sure if I'll go back to college or just resume studying on my own time, but I'm still interested in this field.

So, my honest answer would be certainly 6 months to a year Minimum. Guess I'm wondering if I should say that or make it sound like I plan to just stay there.

Why would you tell them? I mean things can happen within a few months it can be 6 month or 6 years noone knows. Plus by telling them that you only make them not hire you. Tell them for eternity. I wish they told me how long they will keep me i be lucky to get a day notice. Last job fired me on a monday without no notice or even a warning. They could had gave me a week or two notice so i can find another job. But no just fire me on the spot. Because work is slow.

It's expensive to hire a driver. They want to make sure you will stick around long enough to make their investment in you worthwhile. I think I might kind of give them a vague answer leaning towards sticking around. "well, I have some interests, but I'm a long way off". You might come up with a great computer related trucking idea from doing both, and after a while, they may be willing to help you out, listen to your idea, implement an idea. Be your first customer.....? Never know.

Most companies will milk you for what its worth within a few weeks. My company for example which runs lease on owner operators. Have very little cost related to the business. I say its easy for them to rotate drivers around. But i guess go with your plan. But know that if you dont give them a good answer and they are looking for a longer commitment you won't get hired. Understand you are trying to do the right thing and be honest. But never have i been with a company that would treat me the same. Its their interest vs mine.

I guess I was thinking of how to put my college time including a 2 year Degree into perspective. Or maybe just say that I'll do computer stuff on the side on my own time while continuing to work for them.

I'm not saying a trucking company won't chew you up and spit you out at the first opportunity. Been there done that as a driver. Just saying it is expensive to hire people. A lot goes in to getting from deciding to hire a driver to having a driver efficiently turning loads and making money. Trucking companies suck, but imagine how many idiot drivers a company goes through before they find out one that sticks around? Even if the trucking company sucks and the drivers are smart and the whole dynamic changes. You add up all the costs a CR England has holding classes with dozens of people all over the country. I bet their drug test costs alone are astronomical. I bet penny pinchers watch this and boot recruiters who bring in people that leave right away for ANY reason on a regular basis. So they are picky.

I was trying to put a positive spin on something simple.
Tell them what they want to hear. Do what you're gonna do. They will do the same thing to you.

I'd tell them ya PLAN on being there for a while. When it's time to leave tell them the plan changed, easy. I mean, now days if a company can get six months out of a driver it's a success.

Just lieing to the company or someone because they lied to me doesn't work for me.

The slimy, twinkle toes, #### sucker, DM I have sat in his chair and lied right to me with a strait face the other day. I'd like to pull his lungs out through his nose, but that probably won't work out the way I want it to for me or my family.

    Don't degrade yourself.

If the company your trying to get on with doesn't want you, just go to the next one. None of these companies give a dang about you, that's a harsh reality. It's a business relationship, nothing more. Your kidding yourself or buying into something that's not real if you think differently.

this is funny. i usually say, "i want to hang up my hat, and retire here".

that works nearly 90% of the time.

i usually quit after about 4 to 8 years.

but this one place i went to, when i said, "i want to hang up my hat and retire here".

the HR guy said, to the boss, that means you are lazy and want to sit and do nothing.

obviously, that interview came to an end, if the owner doesn't WANT people to stay a while.
(and it was a job that constantly advertises, which says what really about that company?)

in the end, NEVER say 6 months to a year. you are already telling them you move on or job hop.

just make mention you want to stay put?

    When they ask

How long do I plan to stay?"

Say, "in 10yrs we are going to celebrate the 10th anniversary of you asking me that question!"
