My DOT physical was due yesterday but I'm not working right now. I want to keep my CDL active. I have to go to the licensing place later today. Do I check the "Excepted Intrastate" box or, if not, what box do I check? Anyone know? I appreciate all your help.

Go pay for a physical out of pocket if you want to stay current,it's your best insurance.

Ask the doc, tell him you just want to keep CDL current.

Check with your state DMV. I was able to for the last 4 years in Florida.

"In order to keep your CDL, some states will allow a CDL holder to certify in a category that does not require a medical certificate e.g. Intrastate Excepted, if they are not currently driving.
You will have to check with your State Drivers License Agency (DMV) to see if they permit this option. This will give you a way to maintain your CDL without a current medical card.
If you want to start driving again, you will first have to get a new medical card, and then visit your DMV, to self-certify in the category that is appropriate for the type of driving you will be doing."

Do what you said, you can call DMV to make sure, I believe that you have to go to a different tier, but to be honest it would be better just to have a Physical and keep up with a current Fed Med card, you never know what the future holds.

Not only that, but some departments can't keep their information informed. Won't know their left hand from their right hand.

Keep it current and mark interstate. You won't get hassled for being intrastate but if you mark intrastate, You'll get hassled if going interstate. I'm an intrastate driver now. But i'm not changing it from interstate.

Go to your local DMV, let them know you wish to retain your CDL but without a valid Med Card. On the self certification they will usually mark Intra and exempt. MI and NC will then reissue your CDL with a restriction K.

If you wish to stay Interstate, then you MUST have a valid Med Card.

If you self-certify without a valid Med Card you CANNOT drive either Intra or Inter even though the license says Intra. You can drive under certain conditions. See link for those conditions

    This is from NC.

If you operate in both excepted intrastate commerce and non-excepted intrastate commerce, you must choose non-excepted intrastate commerce.

You operate in non-excepted intrastate commerce when you drive a CMV only in intrastate commerce and are required to meet NC DMV’s medical certification requirements.

You operate in excepted Intrastate commerce when you drive a CMV only in intrastate commerce activities for which NC has determined you are not required to obtain a DOT medical examiner’s certificate. Intrastate Commerce:

non-excepted interstate commerce and are required to provide a current DOT medical examiners certificate (49 CFR 391.45),commonly referred to as a DOT medical examiners certificate or DOT card, to the NC DMV. Most CDL holders who drive CMVs in interstate commerce are nonexcepted interstate commerce drivers.

Unless you're absolutely, positively, sure that you'll never drive interstate again, my advice would be to go take the physical, get the med card, and keep it current....That way you're ready to roll out at any time, should the need arise, and you head off any potential future hassles at DMV....I've found over the years that it's way harder to get something derogatory removed, as opposed to having the G put something derogatory on you....Going once every two years to get a physical aint that hard, now if it was every 6 months, well, that's different....Yeah, it costs you a hundred bucks out-of-pocket, but that's where we're at now.... Although I'm "semi" retired now, I still keep it current and go get the card every two years, just in case, good luck....

If you do get a new physical, you yourself MUST send the form via fax or email to proper address ASAP or the state will promptly derate you to regular license.
