Most states will send you a letter saying your med card has expired and will give you "x" days to get current or they will give you a lesser license.
But if your Med Card has expired, be pro active and get a new card or go to the DMV to self certify intra/exempt.

Go to your dmv check with the laws and get something in writing
-
"Get something in writing?".... hum... Google your State DMV and search for Self-Certification. The states DMV Websites tell you what you need to do. Most states are going for a Restriction K if Intra/exempt so you have to go in person anyway.

I'd never do anything other then personally walking in with the paperwork. Way too many stories of people faxing or mailing or emailing and getting screwed because SUPPOSEDLY, the paperwork was never received.
After all, you fax or mail or email. Who are you sending it too, one person or the entire department?Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
It usually goes to a central E-Mail box for that department. Personally. After I E-Mail the form which is basic information, nothing personal, give them a call in a week to see if they got it.
-
That's just it, @Mark Kling , People are following up and there's nothing there to follow up on.
Unless you personally take the forms in. You can pretty much gaurantee yourself lost in the mail. Or on the desk, or whatever.
See the stories on this forum all the time. And i have one friend i've known a few years end up in that very situation.
I've always taken it in. But to me, The clinic and DMV are only 2 miles apart. So it's no big deal. I feel sorry for you guys that live out in the boonies, 100's of miles from either location. -
Texas allows email of the Med Examiner's Certification and they send a receipt within a day or so.
Texas says the following when going from intrastate to interstate: "Applicable transaction fees will apply."
Add to this that you have to do the paperwork in person when upgrading back to interstate, seems like it's better to just keep the cert on record... -
As long as you have your medical done before you go back to work you are OK. Just be sure it is done by a Federally Registered Medical Examiner . Make sure he/she is registered on <www.fmcsa.dot.gov/medical/driver-medical-requirements/national-registry-certified-medical-examiners> and that you register your medical with the BMV.

If you fail to go get a valid medical card, you will be handed a peice of paper at your DMV, it will be either Teir one for those with valid medical cards or tier two for those without valid medical cards.
Under T2, you are not allowed to earn money as a trucker around the USA or inside state only hauling. (Intra state.) T2 CDL's are retained in a data base for future call up federally if the USA gets hit with a nuclear, bilo or chem weapons for purpose only to haul the dead in the reefer trucks away from the inner zone.
I had someone say one time that there will not be any CDL with no medical cards allowed to remain valid under any situation at all at some point in the future, but I don't have anything that will support or discard this rumor. -
I'm not driving but wanted to keep mine. So things wouldn't get messed up I kid got the physical and kept it as is.
