I've been considering taking some college courses online, and I wondered if there were any truckers on here who had done that.

Any advice or tips to share? Any regrets? What schools are worth it, and what's a waste of money?

I'm just looking for some basic courses, not to get a degree. I love trucking! Don't want a career change.

online courses are great, especially if you work odd hours.

Course difficulty depends on the teacher and how hard they want to work.

I think a lot depends on what you want to study. There are a lot of Community Colleges that offer courses that you can take at your own rate that I've enjoyed, but there is some stuff you couldn't take on line (i.e. truck driving). Plus, are you looking to earn a degree, or just better yourself? I say go for it!

I have not personally but know a few who are.. It seems to be working out for them and a degree is a degree pretty much anymore.. I also read that more and more people are turning to online degree's due to increase of gas, cost of living ext.. all going up..

I just started my third semester. Sometimes it gets a little rough. But for the most part it's ok. I had a class last semester that just about killed me.

I've done it, and my wife is currently doing it. Since you don't want a degree (at this point), a lot of concerns aren't.

Once I pay off a few things, I'll probably go BACK to taking the occasional class online.

Now, if you are thinking long-term and eventual degree, I'd pay attention and be careful in my selection of schools/courses. You'd want to make sure the credits would transfer to other schools.

As it is.... it's still something I'd look at, but I'd not stress over it as much.

All in all- go for it

Online classes work great. There are some things that just can't be done that way, but a lot of stuff can be these days. I did several classes online through a community college when I lived in Florida, and it worked out great. Had to show up at campus three times during the whole semester.

Definitely check out the credentials of the school. I've never dealt with those schools that are strictly online, so don't know anything about them. Go for it, and good luck!

If you are just looking to take some classes to expand your horizons (i.e. photography, art, history of something that interests you, etc.), than it probably won't matter where you take your classes.

However, if you think that you might want to put those classes towards a degree than I would mirror what others have said and try to take classes from an accredited University that has an actual campus. Although any college credit is good to have, classes and degrees from a recognizable institution will be well worth the extra time and money. Most major campuses offer online versions of many of their classes, and you can take them as a "non-degree seeking" student.

BTW, many colleges have "Continuing Education" programs that are similar to a community college as far as their entrance requirements, but it is housed within the four-year university. I would check these out.

    Best of luck!

yeah, one of the things you have to look out for are online "degree mills" as everyone (who's hiring) knows who these are. any community college should work and then just find a good 4-year college that has a distance education program. i think you should steer clear of "online only" universities - like phoenix univ. or whatever it's called.

it would be a real shame to invest all of that money and even do the work and then not have a degree that's recognized, etc. there's reviews for online education programs that you can look up to make sure that a particular school's online degree program is accredited.

good luck getting back on the horse!
