My authority went into effect on January 1st of this year. I knew that I would be receiving a notice of a safety audit sooner or later.

The following is an email I received today. I have blocked out personal information, including the name of the woman who emailed me. Note the poor usage of English grammar and the threat to put me out of service if I don't reply. People call me all day long and never indicate my line is "busy". If it is, it goes to voicemail.

***UPDATED*** I've since checked the address included in the email and it certainly is an adjunct office of the FMCSA.

***UPDATE 2*** It is real. I followed up accordingly.

My original post was not so much questioning the legitimacy of the contact, as much as it was to point out the poor grammar and incorrect sentence structure, as well as the threatening undertone of the email in the first place. When I called, the woman's Mexican accent was so strong, I could hardly understand what she was saying to me.

Threatening to place someone out of service before they even have a chance to respond is very offensive and indicative of the bullying tactics so many bureaucratic agencies in our government employ these days.

These are the people in charge of our government that are supposed to be serving us, however, we know better, don't we?

Nonetheless, I called her back and needless to say her spoken English wasn't much better than her written. FMCSA Letter.JPG

Seems more like an email from a dispatcher than a professional. Crazy

Are you sure the email came from the fmcsa? They usually use certified snail mail. Check the address the email was actually sent from.

FMCSA's official address is in Washington, DC and the San Diego DOT branch's zip code is 92123 not 92154.

There is an FAA office with a 92154 zip code but unless youre flying your truck around I'm not sure why they'd be contacting you lol

I would find out who the senior person is in your state and forward it to them. Let them know that it looks like a scam and ask them if it legit or not.

I run a safety and compliance consulting firm as a side business and in 10 years I have never had a client contacted by email from the US DOT/FMCSA without first receiving a regular mail notice. They only use email after you have already started a dialogue with them, otherwise first contact is via US Mail, then you call them before they call you.

The lady that done mine worked for Arkansas Highway Patrol with the title of auditor. She is just a farm raised country girl, but was nothing but courteous, professional, and most of all full of very useful info. I was worried about the whole deal but really wasn't anything to it.
