Detroit S60 pre-egr
Cummins pre-egr
Caterpillar anything with 3406 or 6nz
All produced in 2003 and earlier. All can be argued as to which is the best truck engine ever made.pigeon river trucking, Dieselmydrug and rank Thank this. -

Love my n14 Cummins but it's a little noisey and fuel mileage is lack luster...but unlike my emissions trucks its yet to spend a second in the shop over emissions problems .
Always heavy and poor aerodynamics but with no idleing fuel mileage stays in the low 6s .Dieselmydrug Thanks this. -

Any engine can be reliable but all of them are a crap shoot when you come down to it.

Ive had nothing but good luck with my E-model cats . Never a problem, sold the trucks but never did an inframe or anything for that matter. Had a 6nz that we never touched ,just drove it for over 10 years. Super just fantastic engines.
Now my 14L ddec 4 pre egr has 100,000 on it and uses no oil at all and has been trouble free also, but time will tell.
Never had a cummins, so cant comment on those .Dieselmydrug Thanks this. -
I never cared for Cummins either, probably because they were fleet engines. A guy who I first teamed with ended up driving a '96 'Shaker with a 550 DD. Sounded like a big locomotive

But they would be in older trucks and a company wouldn't take it on right??
