If at all possible, don't pull into Ohio rest areas, especially on 71 and 271. Notorious D.O.T. traps. I've also seen them a few times at the Burbank exit (204) banging on doors at the truck stops smh...

Yes yes yes. DOT loves hanging out in Virginia at rest areas and beat truck stops.
I don't believe ANY, violation found in these area are warranted as it is a place for rest and repairs. It makes you wonder if the DOT waits at the liquor store waiting to see who leaves.
There is nothing good to come from an inspection, fact. And if it really was about safety then the DOT should shutdown all the cars and trucks that need to be recalled. Tires falling off, dangerous airbags, car fires, transmission failer rolling over peoplemitmaks Thanks this. -
I know some will say, There is nothing to worry about if your doing everything right.

He might consult the Randy Weaver playbook. Not encouraging it--just saying it has happened when the police come a-knocking without lawful authority.

Guess he will knock on every door at the hotel? Hotel will not give out room numbers, with out just cause. They would not know who to ask for. And at home , DOT would need to call ahead , or have a very long wait. As I am out running around. Or just left for two weeks of vacation . Or Till the local police shows up, "I have a unknown person pounding on my door, I do not feel safe going to the door".Big_D409 Thanks this.

While everyone's experience is different... In MI I've never seen DOT actually bother someone in a rest area. What I do see frequently is the state boys will park in a U-turn in the center of the expressway a couple miles from the rest area. When they catch someone speeding, or just obvious defects they'll pull them in to the rest area to do the inspection there.
