If you stomped the gas , the tranny would shift from first into nothing . When the car then slowed down, it would be in first . You're bringin' back some bad memories. 53 horsepower ( if u could call that power ).
And if you turned sharp and then released the wheel, it would kinda turn to straighten, but not smoothly. So, the car would rock back and fouth , like it was straightening out in stages. Well, the seat was ok and the white paint didn't peel off ( I'm trying to point out the positives ).
It was a 1980 model.
Then my brother bought a 1985 Escort when he got out of college ( it was new ). The shift linkage was out of adjustment. When shifted to park, it wasn't. He parked it on a hill at his apartment complex . Locked the door and then watched it roll away. It jumped a curb and then it a big bolder . Wrinkled the left rear quarter panel.
Neither of my brothers will even consider buying an American brand car.
After my first car, a Buick, I owned Japanese cars only.
Recently, I bought a used 1998 Ford Expedition. Eddie Bower edition. V-8. Leather. Sunroof. 4-wheel drive. Excellent condition. 116,000 miles. Nicest vehicle I have owned. And roomy. Drives well. $4000 bucks.
I will consider Fords in the future.
Too bad the American car companies built so much krap in the '70 's and '80 's . Unfortunately for them, some people have long memories.
So, in '74 my dad bought a new Plymouth station wagon. 318 v-8. 3 speed on the column. Most body panels didn't line up. Excessive free play in the steering and you had to replace the clutch every 20k miles...I took the car to a car wash. The self serve kind. I blew the paint off the roof.... enough said.
And the unions would whine that we should buy American. Yeah, if you build something worth buying.
American cars have gotten better. Imo, thank the Japanese for there tough competition that forced the big three to up their game. Otherwise , we would still be
driving junk.Gearjammin' Penguin, Knucklehead and Captain Zoom Thank this. -
That car on the trailer is a Dodge Colt I think from the mid-seventies. Mitsubishi probably built it. As you know, Chrysler sold many Mitsubishis badged as Chrysler products.

Found a '72 Pinto Runabout with the German 1600 SOHC for $500.00.
No interior, windshield, transmission, driveshaft, rear end, wheels, steering...just a body and engine. Thought it was a great deal till I kept reading.
Still, the engine is worth that much if it's in good shape--it was a lot better than the Ford 2.3 liter in general although not as powerful. -
My wife drives a 2014 Chevy Cruze and it has been trouble free. The only issue we had was the factory battery and it was replaced under warranty. Found during an oil change and even the routine service is done for free. No complaints.
Captain Zoom Thanks this. -
Rented a Cruze LTZ once. VERY impressed. Reminded me of a hotted up BMW 320 I used to drive (but with an extra set of doors and an automatic). The dynamics are amazing in an "entry level" front drive car.
(I'm pretty sure the LTZ is a turbo which would have boosted the experience somewhat, but the Ecotec is no joke in any form) -
Yup. Hers is a turbocharged 4 banger. I think that is the base motor now. I wanted to drive a turbo diesel but the dealer did not have any.
