Aside from "glad hand" locks, is there anything else one can do to prevent / discourage an empty trailer from being stolen from a truck stop while a driver is home for a few days ??? The companies trailers are numbered with lettering, so I'm hoping that may also discourage ? FYI... if I could get the trailer onto my property, I would. Thanks.

You can get a kingpin lock sold in truckstops and truck supply stores. They are more stout than the glad hand locks. Just don't forget it's on there. :biggrin_2554:

Also, if you don't have anything in the trailer worth stealing then don't lock the doors. That way they won't get damaged when some lowlife tries to break into it. You'll just have to tell the family of crackheads that moved in to get out. :biggrin_25523:

A couple of years ago one of the new guys pulled a m/t trailer 75 miles to get loaded, after getting loaded the trailer dropped down on the tires as he started pulling out of the dock. The shipping mgr. called and said there was a kingpin lock on the trailer. After overhearing the unbelievable conservation in the office, they sent me up there bobtailing to check it out. When i arrived there the maintenance guys had cut the lock off. The fifth wheel on the truck was ruined and the newbie was looking somewhat dumbfounded. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how many times, or how hard he had to ram the tractor into the trailer to make it stick. I told him to head for the yard and be careful because his luck had about ran out, he got fired, and yes the three foot yellow chain was still on the mangled lock.

I have the two above, it is almost impossible to get them off unless you use a torch. I used this in combination with glad hand lock, and bar lock on the back doors. The red one cost me $50 on ebay and the silver one cost me $75 at a truck store...

Best kingpin locks you can buy

I really don't know, i wouldn't have believed it if i hadn't of seen it firsthand. From the looks of the fifth wheel it was jammed in there pretty good. He had to have rammed the trailer extremely hard. Someone upstairs was looking over that trip, for sure.

I've also run a chain through the slots in the front & rear trailer rims & padlocked them when I was flatbedding & didn't have a pin lock with me. Also used a chain & padlock through the stake pokets around & under the trailer in front of the kingpin of a flatbed before, but it can get messy.

I had no idea what they were either. I might go with Crete and they make you purchase one when you start with the company for security reasons.
