I don't have any need for a generator with a daycab but after reading this and being somewhat familiar with Hursts setup I can't see spending the money or frame space on an APU. These little generators can be found into in city anywhere if one goes down plus you could use it for other power needs if need be, running tools and the like.

I figure my well maintained champion will have about 2000 hours on it by spring and Ill pull it off and sell it on Craigslist and put a new one on .
The whole setup paid for itself in 18 days . -
What type of a.c. you use window unit or what? Thanks
-
Are you using generator for just cooling or are you using them heat in winter to? If so what's your setup look like
-
Window A/C. Does pretty good. Freezes me out sometimes. Have to watch what level I set it at before going to sleep. Generator can run 10 hr powering it and use about 1 gallon of gas to do it. During the winter, I use the generator to keep batteries up (run thru a Xantrex Inverter/Charger under the bunk) and power a oil pan heater. I use a Webasto for heat.
I made a custom frame for the door window (1/2" plywood covered with reflective insulation) that I put in when stopped for a break. Has a couple of brackets to support AC. I just put the frame in the window, slide in the AC, and cool away. Total cost, less than $135. Got the AC on sale at Lowes complete with a 3 year no-questions asked warranty.

This is a no brainier ! I've had my set up installed about 6 weeks now at a total cost of about a grand .
My fuel mileage has gone from high 4s and low 5s to low to mid 6s .
Plus when winter comes the generator will run my block heater while my espar heater warms the cab . -
I know this was posted awhile ago but im laughing with tears running down my checks. Im picturing a dot smelling a tank of cat piss. This really made my day.

Montana is the only place I have ever had anyone stab my fuel tank to check fuel color. That was a long time ago.
If done professionally and cleanly,.. I dont see a problem setting up an external fuel tank for a generator.
But yeah I can imagine the surprise opening a tank with an ammonia saturated aroma of urine. Definitely would not be pleasant.

I dont have a bunk heater in mine like these guys do.
I actually use an infrared space heater I bought at Walmart 2 yrs ago. It will make it nice and toasty even on the coldest days.
Mine will run for 15 - 18 hrs per tank. I carry two 2 gal plastic tanks. When the generator is full and both cans are full,.. I can go 3 days before I need to buy gas again. Its a PITA at times,.. but compared to the fuel savings from not idling,.. its totally worth it.

You have a pic of heater? Can't think of what it looks like
