I just test drove a new Focus, they come standard in them now. GF loves them, too.

You need to be looking everywhere at once, 100% of the time. That's what I say anyway.

So much this it's not even funny. I've seen a couple drivers in the past week or so almost hit over-width loads (one was a house move) because they aren't paying attention (likely on the phone) and can't hear the lead pilot car tell them "20 foot wide there driver, please use the shoulder".

It the right light, it's hard to see that overhang coming into your lane, especially on a two-lane highway with gravel shoulders.

I can normally tell how many cars are within 1/4 to 1/2 mile behind me. This way when I have to turn or something like change lanes or coming to a stop I can see if they are all there still or did I lose one. Really helps in passing lanes that are running out.

Some of us don't have a sense of smell, but smoke is a dead give away, although I'm not in the habit of cooking brakes.

You know, yanking the steering wheel suddenly as the driver seems to have difficulty with lane control. This driver repeatedly drifted into the oncoming lane or across the fog line by a foot or two and would yank back into the lane.

As a flatbedder I might drift right and left deliberately to better see my load when there is no traffic, but that wasn't the case with this driver. He simply had poor steering habits. One hand at 12 o'clock on the wheel on a road that requires full attention and good technique to maintain lane control.

In bc they make us move anything over 14 wide at night... Go figure lol. But on that note I never have my radio on generic channels when doing oversize with pilots. I need to know I can hear them and not have other people yacking on it.

I run a VHF with my pilots and also have the CB on 19. It has helped when meeting another oversized load on a corner. One instance I was 135 feet long and the load coming at me was 15 feet wide. I had to stop because I needed part of his lane and he needed part of mine.. LOL
