My 425 was a dog when I bought it. I turned the screws on the pump out 1 turn and it ran much better but the boost remained at a max of 21 lbs. with the pyro at less then 800. I turned the screws out 1/2 turn more. Engine pulled better again but the boost remained at 21 lbs. and the pyro no more than 850. Can I turn the screws out more or am I missing something. Black smoke I can't tell about. The truck has 1 short single exhaust pipe so I can't see what is coming out. I won't ask about the smoke on the cb because if I get an answer it will no doubt be a stupid one. BTW before I began the adjustments, I installed a boost gauge and pyrometer because the truck had neither. Your thoughts?
Turned up cool running 425

It would really help to know what engine make and year you have.

You're right. '95 425 C Cat

If im not mistaken the C model 425 had a wastegated turbo. So id shim the gate a little and that will increase your boost.
Just dont pinch off the line .
Id go another turn or so and watch your temps. You can pull all day long at 900 950 tops.
If you shim the gate that will bring temps down also. Just dont push that stock turbo much over 28 psi .bigguns Thanks this. -
I would start with the charge air cooler. You should get a lot more boost than 21lbs.

I plan to test the CAC. If it were leaking badly I would expect to see high pyrometer temps. Also the coolant stays at 195. To me everything points to turn the screws more. I guess I am looking for reassurances that I am OK to turn them more. With 1.5 turns I expected to see more changes other than just an improvemennt in power.

Your turbo is too small. Won't put out enough air for the amount of fuel you're putting to the injectors. Although I ran a 91 KW with the stock turbo and the fuel turned up 50% for a long time and didn't have any problem with it. Just watch the pyrometer cause the only thing stopping it from melting itself on a hill is the driver. If it never goes over 9-950 shouldn't have any trouble with it I wouldn't think.

I thought the stock turbo should produce at least 25# of boost and on up to 28 # anyway. This is why I am asking. I don't know a whole lot about turning the pump up on this engine.

I don't think you have any issue with the amount of fuel if your EGT isn't above 950 unless the air to air is leaking somewhere. That would be the cheapest first thing to do would be to have it checked. If your turbo has a wastegate you could mess around with it a little by preventing it from opening all the way. Probably get you 3 or 4 more lb. of boost but if you cut it all the way off it'll probably blow a seal. I agree with the other guy. 28 lb would be a bunch of boost from a 425 stock turbo.
