I should have been clearer @brian991219 , I'm aware of all this, I was speaking of the highmoumts w/o headracks, that currently are not considered auto transporters by the FHWA as of the current time (as your quote pointed out.) The language in the bill could have easily been construed so as to wipe out the FHWA interpretation, along with increasing non-stinger overall length, eliminating the issues y'all have been having with the states starting to enforce the no overhang provisions many of them have on 53' trailers.

It is telling that it did not happen, while the 80' stinger rule was included.

Understood. Yes, they could have fixed the whole issue with a slight change in the new rule, since they decided to give 75' to highmounts it would have been nice to include 3&4 overhang, or at least remove the head rack rule, especially since they are now allowing cargo on the headrack for stingers while still retaining the overall length and overhang rules for stingers. The industry standard for highmounts seems to be tandem sleeper tractors, maybe we just need a front of trailer overhang restriction if they are going to eliminate the head rack, this would take care of the guys I see with ridiculous front of trailer overhangs while allowing those of us that do daily p&d runs to maximize our capacity per trip. I would also like to see it codified Federally to allow 40' 5 packs to have 3 front and 4 rear overhang, so that states like NY could no longer restrict their use, given that they are perfect for city routes. I could use up to a 45' straight truck including overhang in my home state of PA but can't go into NY with a 40' straight truck unless I have no overhang or meet their definition of a "tow truck car carrier" and then I am only allowed 3 foot to the rear of the lower deck.

P.S. @Hammer166 I really enjoy your contributions to these forums, it is guys like you and Stan that really get what is going on in the car haul industry. It is refreshing to have intelligent discourse with fellow professionals.

Ok I have read over the bill and still can't figure out if the length law changed for stingers or not? I know it says 4 feet off the front and 6 off the rear. I'm now hearing that the 80 feet is how long they are going to allow a stinger to be. Has anyone else heard the same info?

I'm reading it as I can be 80' bumper to taillights and have the 4' and 6' overhang. At least until some one with authority tells me different.

I was never under 75' with my quick loader anyways. Although I was usually good on my overhang.

That is the intent, but until each state acknowledges that the old rules are still in effect. Just because it is in the highway bill doesn't automatically make it the law of the land. Certain states automatically adopt the new rules others have to legislatively adopt them.

Just read thru the 5520, so you are saying 80' empty truck/trailer up to 90' loaded 4' off front bumper, 6 off rear bumper???

Really wish they would write these things in English.

That's the way I'm reading it. But as Brian said it will probably be awhile before all the states accept the ruling.

I have heard Iowa is not going to allow the extra length until there legislature passes it.

Any clarification on this issue? I got cited today in PA for being 83'10". As I understand it the rule is that we can have 4' in front 6' in rear but cannot be over 85'.

Where in PA did they cite you? The only reason I can think of is being on one of the 28.6 trailer roads. Or a misinformed officer.

Pittsburgh airport. I delivered 3 units to Enterprise, and Allegheny County had an inspection station set up at outbound lanes to 376. I literally exited interstate into airport, delivered 3 of 8 units and drove around to exit and they pulled me in. I had a Grand Cherokee on my head rack and a Chrysler 200 on trailer tail (top deck) that I lowered after emptying bottom. My overhang in front was 3 ft and 4'9" off rear as measured by them.

The problem I'm having is I've seen all sorts of websites quote the FAST act change, but nothing official seems available online.
