Jessee..I dont think there is room to do that and it wouldnt be very stable either..Without some sorta brace it would be like holding it in your hand as you drive around in 90 mph winds..
wolverine.....Use a rag or spray a lil wd 40 on the ant and it solves most of the ice prob..For me a 1.7 is to high although it 7 watts outta of a 100 pushing..A 5 footer is to short to get the coils up high enough on a plastic truck..
Top loaded seems to be a better option over a mid load like the 2000,A good top load will even out do a nice ant like the predator..
Think im gonna try my duel coiled predator with a 22" shaft while useing my 40" tall mount..Doubt it will be any better but its all i got..Single coil comp on a 22" shaft mounted on a 40" tall mount is just not cuttin it..
Sooner or later ill get to a shop that sells 6/7 ft skip shooter or firesticks..

I have not been able to find a 6' firestick in my travels or I would probably give it a try. The SWR reading is measured with a cheap Astatic PDC1 meter, so it could be higher or could be lower but seems to be in close agreement with radios meter, also if I angle the antenna forward more the SWR will be lower, but I dont want to do that. I have also tried a Frances 5.5' and SWR is 1.8 to 2.0. With a reading of 1.7 Im at 93% efficiency so a radio with a carrier of 4 watts pep 16 watts would be 3.72 pep of 14.88, and a radio with a carrier of 5 watts swinging 20 watts would be 4.65 watts swinging to 18.60 watts so Im not too concerned about.

10-15 degree lean is ok but any more than that is makeing your set up more and more useless..
Neither of your meters are known for accuracy but its better than nothing..Although it doesnt make alot of difference i still go for lower, the lower # might bring in a decibel or two more..wolverine11 Thanks this. -
7 ft skipshooter up, 2 ft road pro down mount insulated from truck. 1.2 swr when installed on 2017 Cascadia. pvc sleeve to help support and decrease flopping around the base as I had 2 francis 5.5 ft antennas break at the base. So far it has lasted longer than either of the francis antennas. Tried a similar set up with 2 2 meter vhf antennas and it did not work.wolverine11 Thanks this. -
What do you mean by "insulated from the truck"?
I see a dipole to..Now dont hold me to it but i ran a wire from ant mount to radio and im thinkin that my wire is a dipole of sorts as well...My swr's were low, reflect was about 22 db,resonce was in the low single digits and resistance was giver or take 50 ohms till i got up into the channel 30 area(27305 range) then up it went..I wanna try a 6-7 ft skip shooter or firestick if im ever in the right area to get one.
Oh..The pvc pipe..Is that just there in place with gravity or glued or something into place??wolverine11 Thanks this. -
I insulated the mount from the bird perch with a double layer of bicycle innertube. Before insulating it the SWR was over 2. I would have thought adding more metal would have improved things but that was not the case. I used heat shrink tubing in multiple layers to build up the antenna width to match the inside of the pvc pipe to keep in place and to protect the antenna from chafing. The pvc sleeve slides up the antenna so I can access the bottom ferrule and check for wear. The bird perch I have is heavier duty than the Wilson model.Last edited: Sep 7, 2016

Hhhmmmm never though of useing shrink tube for that..I had thought of spray in insulation but stuffing a stick through for drainage vien..Good idea..
Have you had an analyzer on it to chk the #'s and whats the average range.. -
MFJ 259B 1.2 SWR at 27.185. 53 ohms. 6 miles nonskip to another mobile rolling forested terrain may have gone further but he arrived home. 10 miles to a individual I didn't know. I don't ask for radio checks as I have found unless you know the individual they may not be very reliable.

Hhhhmmmmm woulda expected more range..My range is not far off from yours and my mfj#'s are pretty much the same..

I would like to get up with someone I know has a decent system and try it. Based on the conversation with the fellow at 6 miles mobile to mobile I believe we could have gone further. Most now don't have a very good system.
