Trust me I view this as a wonderful opportunity. I just wish that the recruiters or recruiter's assistants were able to give out more information. As a side not I am prior service Navy. Unfortunately I got medical before I had enough time in to qualify for G.I. I probably would have become known as the Giant in the Tin Can if I hadn't gotten medical. I was going to be a sonar tech on subs....I'm also 6' 8"![]()

I think the Roommate idea may work. I have a few friends in range that I could possibly Bunk with. @Concorde They basically told me that they won't even look at my application unless I am within 75 miles of Wintersville or 125 of Washington CH.
My issue with moving boils down to, 1. What if they deny my application for some reason? and 2. What if I somehow manage to fail my CDL class? I don't see the latter being a problem as I'm used to driving a standard and for long periods of time( 6-8 hrs. not trucker time I know but still somewhat relevant) I don't really have anything scary in my history that would come up in a background check or from ex employers, drugs not an issue, and clean MVR for more than 8 years if I recall. I've only had 2 speeding tickets and one parking ticket.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid. I'm really looking to use this as an opportunity to move on to o/o choice either here or LandStar. Also, I've been reading through the forums for a couple of days and haven't seen anything I can't deal with on the BS side of things from planners, Dbl's, or shippers/receivers. -
Is Schneider the only company you're interested in?
Three other companies have cdl training in Ohio:
Kalmbach Feeds - Sandusky,OH
Dutch Maid Logistics - Willard,OH
Millis Transfer - Trenton,OHWaggledaddy and gentleroger Thank this. -
Something about Millis didn't feel right when I was researching and I couldn't tell you what it was now. Never heard of the other two. will have to look into them and see what all they offer.
-
Only thing I don't like about Millis is they just run eastern states & Texas. I prefer coast to coast. Weekly pay seems ok though.
From what I've been able to figure out, the other two are mostly OJT which is good in my opinion.
TMC hires from Ohio for their cdl school.
Online Transport has cdl school in Indianapolis.
Jim Palmer Trucking pays well starting new drivers @ .40 cpm + .05 cpm for fuel conservation. Trucks have Tripac APU and lots of other driver amenities. -
Holy yit! Jim Palmer almost sounds too good to be true. I wonder what the catch is. I couldn't find anywhere that Kalmbach has a CDL training program. All I could find for them is that they require 1 yr. experience. Dutch Maid almost sounds desperate for drivers. They charge you for your physical and drug screen and then after 6 months they give that money back. They also charge $30/week for 100 weeks to pay for schooling (read as a 2 yr. obligation) then if you hit your 3 yr. anniversary they give you that 3 grand back. Will have to look into some of the others. Like I said I'm still in the deep research portion of this and will look at most suggestions.

Jim Palmer Trucking - reefers (you're right, the pay is really good)
TMC - flatbed
Maverick - flatbed
MCT Transportation - reefers (their school is in Sioux Falls,SD but they also sponsor drivers through C-1 Truck Driver Training)
Was just looking at C-1 Truck Driver Training website and it shows Willis Shaw Express; that company is now MCT Transportation.Last edited: Sep 16, 2016

Yes consider Dutch Maid if you are interested in reefers...I don't see a problem with saving up 3k for when you choose to leave. Could be much more.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
I don't see a problem with Them setting aside 3k for me either necessarily. But it is essentially a 2 year commitment and I'm not sure about sticking around that long in order to get to my goal. Part of the bright side of Schneider is that they don't deduct from your paycheck (Or at least you don't see them do it) to pay for your school and it only a 1 yr. commitment.
Has anyone here actually done the Jim Palmer CDL training? It sound like you are teamed for the better part of a year. That is a LONG time if you don't get along with the other people in the truck or have a "falling out" while on the road. -
Another question I have is when do you get paid for orientation? Is it during orientation or after you have completed it? Also how long after you get onto the road do you get your first pay? Trying to get an idea of how much I need to have saved up to take care of things before income starts coming in.
