I sometimes haul only overweight with legal dimensions. Just wondering if permitted overweight only loads will be allowed the one mile exemption? as long as I don't cross an overpass? Tried looking on ODOTs website but didn't find it. Not a big deal. It would be nice to not have to permit fuel stops. Thanks for posting.

Probably not by much. The guys that get tagged will still miss the "structures' part.

OHIO ADOPTS PERMIT ROUTE ACCESS AND WEIGHT CHANGE RULES
(September 1, 2016) - The Ohio DOT has taken steps to alleviate what has been one of the specialized transportation industries greatest barriers. For several years, OS/OW carriers have been unable to access off route locations for food, fuel, rest and repairs. That change will become effective September 6, 2016 when the following provision will be included on all Ohio DOT permits:

    OHIO ONE-MILE PERMIT ACCESS RULE

The permittee is authorized to exit the permitted route at any State Highway intersection for food, fuel, rest, or repair provided that the hauler doesn’t travel more than 5,280 feet (1 mile) from the interchange (measured as a lane mile from the junction of the off ramp) and doesn’t cross under (if permitted height exceeds 13’6’’) or over any structure (structure is defined as anything 10’ wide or greater). When re-entering the permitted route, the permittee must abide by the same restrictions as when exiting the permitted route. By traveling more than 5,280 feet (1 mile) or crossing over or under (if permitted height exceeds 13’6’’) any structure the permittee will be considered off route. In the event that the permittee travels beyond the one-mile limit, crosses a structure within the one-mile variance, or violates any other provision of the permit, the permittee is in violation and subject to applicable fines and penalties. The permittee should have the ability to see the facility where they are stopping from the permitted route. ODOT recommends that the permittee familiarize themselves with the various exits and entrances they may choose.

SC&RA will compile a list of exits OS/OW carriers should avoid due to bridge structures and overhead vertical barriers. The list will be provided to SC&RA members only here.

Excuse my ignorance regarding Ohio oversized. I have dealt with them regarding Hazmat. Is the issue the change where the state now allows you to get off at any exit without designating that exit on the permit??? Thanks

So if you're less than 10' wide you still can't go over an overpass to get to a truck stop? Seems a tad silly, especially considering some of the routing around the construction that used to be going on in Hubbard, but still an improvement.

If your less than 12' wide under 13' 6" tall and under 80,000 you should be running in a blanket and this isn't and has never been a problem.

Oxbow, 4mer trucker and MJ1657 Thank this.
