If you don't even have a truck yet, i would suggest you store cash. If 3500 for equip sounds like a lot, you don't have enough cash in the bank.

I second the old fire hose. That stuff is great for all kinds of things. Our local FD has piles of the stuff that is free for the taking. After it gets so old or damaged, they have to take it out of service.
