Doesn't make that big of a cost difference. Buying fuel for a better price will often save you more than trying to squeeze every gallon. At $2 and 5.5 you're talking .363 and 6.5 you're at .307. If a nickel a mile will make or break you the line at the top isn't big enough. I try to keep my fuel cost at or below .40(usd) per mile. It's a win some lose some kinda thing.

I'm seeing these low MPG numbers. These newer trucks should be being 8+ MPG

Get a Peterbilt 372. Peterbilt claimed 10 mpg loaded average with mechanical engines. Ugly as sin though IMO.

Fuel cost is a big part of our bottom line. Just be careful there is a line you cross that you start stepping over dollars to pick up dimes
DDlighttruck, BoxCarKidd, Oxbow and 3 others Thank this. -
I try and buy as cheap as I can in route when needed. I run as slow as I can depending on the pick up and delivery times. If the Reciever closes at 3 and the fastest I can get there is 3:30 I drive (55) slower. If I can be there at 2:30 and reload the same day it's 70 mph the whole time.
I bought a $300 generator and heater and ac unit so verry little idle time.
6.49 mpg running flatbed. $0.317 per mile. Gen fuel looks like $0.40 an hour.
As fuel price goes up it becomes more important! So at $4 a gal it would be .63 per gallon. Rates don't climb as fast as fuel prices, so you better be prepared when they do. If fuel goes back up to over $ 4 I will be in the granny lane.Mack Bigg 1331, fargonaz, Oxbow and 1 other person Thank this. -
