I got picked a 2005 Freightliner with a CAT engine.. It took a jump to get it running and shut down after about 10mins. Called road service and they suspect batteries or alternator. Alternator showed it was charging when the engine started. Could dead batteries shut an engine down?
Could dead batteries cause a truck to shut down?

Yeppers! We once drove a Ford Dually 6L with a dead alternator by hooking jumper cables to a battery in the truck box so we could keep the engine running lol.

Yes. If you got a reefer you can borrow it's juice.

The alternator needs a set of charged batteries in the circuit so it can begin the charge cycle.
-
Would that be either the battery or alternator?
-
I think the ecm shuts off around 9 volts.
-
Could be either. Since alternator was showing that it was charging, probably the batteries. But I'm just a round thingie in front of me holder, I'd get a second opinionJardon, 91B20H8, G13Tomcat and 1 other person Thank this.

If a battery shorts then yea, it could shut down the ecu. Did you lose all power? I.E. Headlights and fan motors shut down also?
Jardon Thanks this.
