A month of school and I have a new career! Its nice to fill out an application, and actually have folks anxious to talk to you!

I put in a few, but fastenal got back to me in less than 12 hours. They have regional routes and are building a hub in my town. Sounds like its anout and back twice a week thing, maybe two overnights in a trucks, with a rythhm of four days running hard and three days off. Heard some of the more established folk run 3 days a week and pulling down great money. I looked up threads on site, and I have heard nothing but good things from people I have talked to that work for them. I am of course interested in opinions on here.

I had a big desire to go into tankers, but most work for that here is in tacoma and seattle, which I don't like, and put me with a very difficult commute.

Pros for fastenal seem to be:
some good exercise, pull up to store and drop cargo by hand, no wait for load or unload. I want to get really good at backing, but won't have to do a bunch of hard backs at the end of a long run. I'll take easy.
Positive from everyone I know who has worked for them.
A bit of everything in driving, seeing beautiful country, and I think a regional job would prep me better for one day owning a truck than driving around the port in a tanker. I still think tanker would be fun but there doesnt seem to be the market for o/o. Please correct me if wrong.

Anything I should be aware of for an interview? I have one ticket for 5mph over so that should not be too hard to explain. Other than that I plan on doing a warm up drive the day before with my school who offers that, since it will have been a week since I have been in a truck.

Anyone know if they use uniforms? I hope they don't, but not a huge issue.

I feel like not having to deal with a bunch of shipping and recieving is nice, but may not be the best training for one day owning a company. I may
Well find myself happy with the gig, and the company seems to want to make it good enough so you stay. The recruiter I talked to gave it to me pretty straight, and I didn't feel like he was exaggerating anything.

If you want lots of home time, take the job. If later you don't care for the short runs, change companies.

Running a private fleet truck is about as good as it gets, lots of pros, few cons, dont just ask the run of the mill questions, some good ones to ask are, what is your driver retention like? (How long do people stay) if i ever relocated, is there opertunity to switch terminals? Whats your fleet maintenance like?

Questions that show your interested in long term, and you care about more than just your check.. good luck

I remember when I first started to scratch my trucking itch I talked with a recruiter for central and I was overwhelmingly excited when they said they would be open to hiring me after I graduated truck driving school. Oh the naivete lol.

It's an exciting time though. Don't let your emotions get the best of ya.

As to your topic can't do much better than starting out with a private fleet. That way if you want to go OTR later on you can skip pass the trainer company ########.

Yeah, I know they aren't excited to talk to me because of anything about me personally, or even thats its all
To my advantage. Even if I am just fresh meat for the grinder it feels good to have replies to resumes. I had a lot of education, experience, etc in my last field but it seems like when things went to heck I couldn't get anyone to give me the time of day.

    Good company.

They have a DC in my area. Home daily. Unload at stores. Tight stores.

It's a lot of work but if you're not afraid of getting out of the cab to move freight, it may be for you.

I'd rather unload myself and move on than wait for Slack-jawed Jimmy to get motivated to unload me. Then again, I'm not 300 pounds going on type 2 diabetes either.

Different jobs for different truckers. There's a job for each kind of driver.

Thanks to all! Glad to hear more positive about company. I worry that I'm settling for the first thing. I would rather move some freight by hand than bump a dock and hope for a short wait.

As a disclaimer I know nothing of the company and seriously think you should go for it instead of the run of the mill otr company route most choose. Private fleets always seem to have happy drivers.

But as a fun story. One time I bumped a dock and sat for five hours while they loaded me. All upset about it... then pulled out to close the doors and trailer was jam packed floor to ceiling with small boxes. Apparently a guy had to load 18000 boxes by hand onto it. Just saying. I'm quite glad I didn't have to do it.

When we started school we already had a company in mind. Fastenal was one of the companies we considered because we really liked the terminal manager there....

We don't feel like we settled for our position when we took the first offer because it was the only job we wanted and the only reason we went to trucking school.

Private school opens many doors. Pay attention and remember you learn something every day... When you stop learning you aren't paying attention.

    JReding and Spyke Thank this.
