Are there any good starter companies that train flatbed for new CDL drivers? I'd rather skip the year of cheap dry van labor OTR to get a 1+ year experience company.

    It's really hard to do.

As I said flatbeding is a uppergraduate type of trucking.

You can ask around and if someone will hire you running flat... you have much to learn. Such as working strengths, breaking strengths, deck weights where it should be loaded what to belly load or not etc. You will I imagine love it. But it's a learning.

Your most important skill is that coffee standing on your cab floor. There are loads back there that will try to kill you.

    Airborne and Chewy352 Thank this.

That's why I want to flatbed. I don't want to just drive and swing doors open. My Dad drove Conestoga trailers for many years back and forth Virginia to Ohio and side kits. He quit in the 90s so I know lots have changed since then. I know that Maverick and Melton hire new CDL graduates for flatbed. I'm not too sure if Melton hires in my area.

Maverick, Melton, TMC, Mc Elroy, Boyd Brothers, all will hire new grads, securement school and driver trainer.
I never worked for any of them, I learned the hard way but they ire new grads. From what ive heard Boyd and McElroy are really good but that's second hand.

I've heard some Prime flatbed trainer say new flatbedders buy $3400 in gear for the truck, payroll/settlement deduction is typically used.

I recommend tmc and pgt Trucking. If you go with a drive van job first look into btc Trucking after 3 months.

Check out Maverick Transportation I hear their securement training is thorough. A driver of theirs posts a ton of YouTube videos. Search for Dale Clay. They love prior-service military. When I was in CDL school TMC had reputation as good training.
