Hello, A friend of mine just purchased his first truck and isn't currently borrowing tools. As a congratulations I would like to buy him the basic essential tools that he will need but do not know where to start. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.
Thank you

I started with this
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-320-piece-socket-set-0589294p.html#srp
Then some cheap plier set, 18" pipe wrench, 18" crescent wrench, set of screwdrivers, and keep adding every pay day. -
It is hard to determine without knowing a lot of things like what kind of truck, how old and what is his mechanical ability. It is useless to spend money on someone who can't tell the difference between a wrench and a screwdriver. Beleive me there are a lot of people like that.

A decent set of basic hand tools (wrenches, sockets, ratchets, screwdrivers). Doesn't need to be Snap-On expensive but something of quality at least (Craftsman, Mastercraft, Westward/Jet are all pretty good). An air brake fitting kit is always good to have. An LED headlamp and a heavy duty flashlight would be a great thing to have as well (preferably something that can be recharged with a 12 volt outlet in the truck).

Tools are nice. But to a ape it's worthless. Now if the man likes to wrench and build old iron for fun between hauls, then get him at least a metric and US sized sets of each type of tool availible. Here in America you could build a case of tools for about 500 bucks but it will be like 3 foot by 5 foot by 2 high and weigh 1000 pounds. Most of which wont be used but once.
Half the stuff on the truck requires impact air. The truck cannot drive a decent sized impact big enough to do the job. You understand?77fib77 Thanks this. -

7/8 wrench/socket has been the best investment for our truck. It seems to fit almost everything.

9/16th and half inch for the brakes. Oh wait they are not manuals anymore but you never know.

Every time I bring home new tools, my wife finds the receipt and takes them back and pockets the money.

Half of us owner operators/ mechanics are broke because of the stupid snap on man with his shiny tools.
That reminds me, i need some new sockets.
