You can put whatever you want in it. California might give you some issues but you'd be fine in any other state. The cheapest route would be to find a matching block and rebuild it using new and existing good parts from the old motor. You can find Cummins ISX blocks for 3-4k on ebay

 

If you buy that. You can stick anything you want inside that thing. As Dlstruck said prior some states will have a problem with it.

Hell my vehicle once had a 6. something desiel, it has a 350 gas engine in it now. The previous owner bought it real cheap because the previous engine was destroyed by the great Junker for Cash effort some years ago. He dropped the 350 into it. It's not a bad engine. Just needs maintaince work he never did.

 

I think there are rules about pulling an EPA motor out of a later model truck and replacing it with a non-compliant engine. Whether it would actually get you in trouble anywhere I have no idea but the real issue would probably be finding a reputable shop willing to do that. A reputable shop will most likely tell you you're on your own with a project like that.

 

And there are some free states with no EPA in sight. No fume recovering fuel pumps, straight pipe and so on.

You can put any engine you want in that truck as long as that engine conforms to the epa mandates of said year. sadly, an n14 is not allowed

 

Even if the legality were not the problem, changing wiring and other hookups to match the truck early engine/ late chassis would be a nightmare. Possible but not economically viable.

 

What about glider kits? Or is there some kind of loophole for those?
