Been searching and can't seem to get a whole answer. I've got a mechanical 3406B cat motor (blown up) in my 94 western star and I've been looking to replace that with a cummins (better in my budget right now) but is there an all mechanical N14 cummins motor and or how hard would it be to convert example: 1998 N14 to complete mechanical motor any helps appreciated Thanks
All mechanical N14 cummins

The very first n14s were mechanical yes.
Kinda rare now thou. Not sure what would be involved in converting an electronic.
I wouldnt be afraid of an electronic n14 or E model cat thou.
Easy to convert over really .Logger4964F Thanks this. -
I thought the N14 is the electronic version of the big cam motors.
KB3MMX Thanks this. -
If you are wanting a mechanical cummins you will need to step back to the NTC BIG/SMALL cam motors. N14's where their electronic motors.
KB3MMX and Logger4964F Thank this. -
I seen a N14 at a sale a while back that I am almost sure was a red head celect plus when new. It was in an older truck with a beige color mechanical pump. I couldn't see what tgey had done for injectors of course. Seemed to idle ok but how it really performed I can't say.
Oxbow and Logger4964F Thank this. -
I'd take a standard n14 over a mechanical Cummins any day .. I drove a few triple 4's that step timing control was pretty annoying when it acted up .. it was nothing to cover the whole parking lot in whitish bluish smoke till engine warmed up

There are mechanical n14, basically same as 855. Seen them more in off road applications but there was some on road uses. I think you would be happier with electronic version though
wore out and Logger4964F Thank this. -
Had a friend that had a small fleet of trucks, mostly Cats, but he had one old Freightliner that had a mechanical N-14.Drivers would fight over who drove it,someone had apparently turned the pump up,and it was the best running truck they had.Yeah, they're basically an 855ci Cummins, just tougher than a Small or Big Cam.I had a 95 N-14 500 Redhead for 20 years,,best, and most trouble free engine I ever owned in 45 years of trucking.

The very first n14 were mcanical. And they were in trucks .rare as only 1 year but it can be done.
Id go electronic thou.Oxbow and Logger4964F Thank this. -
I worked for Cummins back in the day.....there were N14 Celect models and N14 STC models when they were first introduced....the STC was the same as the old 444 in that it used oil pressure to adjust timing by filling a galley within the injector body.
Dino soar, Oxbow, Logger4964F and 3 others Thank this.
