hello, I hear that if you have a BMI over 35 or something like that truck driving companies would force you to take a sleep study. I have a BMI of 38. How much do the sleep study cost? From what I read on the forums is that some companies would pay for the sleep study but would take it out of your paycheck each week is that true?

Your looking at from about $500 to $2500 depending on where and who does it. Unfortunately an infrastructure was put into place in reaction to what was FMCSA Sleep Apnea guidelines. Even though Congress slapped the hands of the FMCSA on these guidelines this infrastructure is in place and drivers are being sucked up into it. I think carriers have actually invested in sleep labs. I heard Crete has one. It is all a huge boondoggle created by the paper pushers at the FMCSA.

It's all going to go by the whim of whatever overzealous idiot is examining you. I've been referred to "secondary inspection" for a sleep study before, and that doctor just happened to "know a guy" down the street who could hook me up with a sleep study, for a reasonable and discreet fee. Do you see where I'm going with this?? Anyways, try to get whatever loser who is examining you, to give you a preliminary screening using a pulse oximeter finger test. This is usually free, but the cost should not exceed $50. Get a very good, uninterrupted night's sleep when you do this. It will measure your blood-oxygen saturation level and will detect any "desaturation events." These desaturation events are an indication that you would have sleep apnea, or would not have sleep apnea. I used this method to get out of a bad situation , where I needed a $2500 sleep study but couldn't afford it. I got the test results from my pulse oximeter test and gave them to the DOT doctor, who determined that there was nothing to warrant further examination--and I did not have to pay that ridiculous fee for a "sleep study."

I believe the axgsleep thing is just first test to see if someone has sleep apnea. If someone does then they still need a local sleep doctor to find the correct pressure settings to fix sleep apnea.

Schneider trucking does everything themselves. They have testing units but they may not have the good one's. Their are different was of checking sleep apnea. Some are not very good.

One way is in a sleep lab they hook like 15 sensors to you and they can see when you breathe, they can see if your brain is telling you to breathe or not. The big thing at a sleep lab is they can see when your actually sleeping. They can see you mind going into REM sleep. That's kinda important because that when they know your sleeping and not just laying in bed with eyes closed. Because you hear people saying, I could not sleep so I got a bad sleep study.

They way it works is first sleep study is to determine if someone has sleep apnea, and how severe it is. Everyone has sleep apnea but their is a normal level, mild, moderate, and severe level. So if someone has sleep apnea that needs to be fixed. You go back for a second sleep study and they hook you up to figure out how much air pressure you need to fix the problem. That's what they call your prescription. They can to this in a sleep lab because the technician can change the air pressure while your sleeping and see how your breathing is and get the correct settings just for you.

The other way is cheaper sleep test were they are recording you somehow and they can't tell if your actually sleeping or just laying in bed awake all night your doing the test yourself in your home basically. So that test is less accurate in determining if you have sleep apnea. If they decide you have it, I believe they give you a CPAP machine(that's the machine you wear face mask with) they give you a auto set CPAP. This CPAP is self adjusting and it will adjust the pressure automatically as you sleep every night. Some people don't adjust to or sleep so good when the machine is changing pressure all night as your sleeping.

This guy has some funny video about sleep apnea. He is the guy that watches people sleep in a sleep lab. He also has his own setup for home study test. Trying to offer cheaper option then full sleep lab. He has some good info about the whole sleep apnea world and even how insurance company don't always do the best thing when it come to sleep apnea and giving people a less then best machine. If someone was getting it thru insurance.

That's a good website. Potential drivers can save themselves a lot of grief and money if they go this route instead of some referral from a doctor that may have a financial incentive to say you have sleep apnea.
If a doc says you need a sleep study, you can whip out the data card and say "NO, I'm covered with THIS."

If companies are providing the sleep test and taking it out of your paycheck then you know they'll over charge to take advantage of drivers
