Look for 70% flat rate companies.

The larger companies usually pay much less than smaller outfits. for reference, we start at 125 for under 10 miles

The closer and faster you unload, the more you make, IF the company is busy.

The cheapest companies have the most work, but you work more to make the same.

Worst part, chassis splits, bad legs, flat tires, Dot loves containers and traffic.

This is from container port group outta Columbus Ohio. Tim,
Sorry about that. I am working on getting caught up with being out yesterday.
What we are looking for in the Columbus area are owner/operators to primarily operate within a 120 mile radius, all roundtrip back to Columbus. These type of routes would get you home every night. Columbus also has some routes going down to WV or you would be able to work off of the Newark, NJ board that would go back and forth from Ohio to New Jersey. The New Jersey routes will have you out during the week though.
We do have insurance and plate programs set up for own/ops to elect into. Bobtail/Liability insurance would run you $41/Month. Occupational accident insurance is $140/Month. Physical Damage (we don’t require, but we do offer) would be based on the value of the vehicle. Our plate program is set up to come out of your weekly settlements at $70/week, for about 26 weeks out of the year you'll pay on that. So the total amount for the plate comes out to be about $1800.
We pay out in mileage bands up to 100 miles out, so they have a flat rate pay, bade don the length of route. Examples of that would be: If you have a route that’s anywhere between 46-50 miles out, it pays $78/loaded leg and $67/empty leg- for a total of $145/roundtrip (plus fuel surcharge). If you have a route that's 96-100 miles out, it pays $117/loaded leg and $109/empty leg- for a total of $226/roundtrip (plus fuel surcharge). So the route pay increases the closer you get to the 100 miles out, but anything over 100 miles out, pays per mile. Any route between 101-250 miles out pays $1.32/loaded miles and $.92/empty miles (plus fuel surcharge on loaded and empty miles).
Unfortunately, we do not have a sign on bonus, but we do have a safety incentive program. The first full quarter that you drive and have no negative violations and show up to work, they will give you $300/quarter, with the potential to earn $1200/year. That incentive value goes up the longer you are here and caps out at $4000/year after 10 years. We look at this as kind of as an ongoing sign on bonus.
We do have discounts both on the local and national level fuel stations. With the Comdata Card that we will provide you with, you can download a free app to your phone to be able to check out all of the discounts in real time. I personally do not have the information with how much people are saving using this application though.

Sorry for the book! Please let me know if you have any other questions! Thank you!

I am with CPG out of Detroit for about 2 months now. I like them pretty good so far. All these companies are comparable. If you're in Columbus, CPG is a good choice because they do orientation there, and run the big box yard off Alum Creek Dr. The orientation guy said the their drivers get their loads set up for them a lot.
