Not a fair question, because there's no way in hell I would personally transport a coil with any less than 5 or 6.

However, theoretically IF there were to be only two, my thinking is if they're too close to the bottom and thus that far below the center of gravity, the top heavy nature of a coil would begin to impose more stress on them. That would require placing more trust in the rack than I would like. -
Yeah, more is always good.
I agree with the more stress but it would also be on two tie downs. Would that one tie down pulling to the rear be better at stopping forward motion than two at the bottom? -
Well, based on the physics of leverage I'd have to say yes.passingthru69 and TripleSix Thank this.

Normally when hauling a coil that only needs 2 chains it is going to be 5,000-19,000lbs and you will have 2-5 of them on the deck. If you are hauling a legal load usually you are belly loading these coils as close together as the reciever allows so as to use only 1 tarp. These lighter coils generally arent as tall or top heavy.

Yeah, it would almost be like pulling a nail with a claw hammer.
But it still bugs.

Before my daughter was born in fall of 88, I was hauling a lot of coils back to back, and quite a few afterwards. Armco Ashland, KY to Armco Middletown, OH. 1975 359 day cab, 855 @ 290 / 13 with a 45ft sliding tandem. Hauled a lot of 40,000lb + single coils across 73 in Ohio. Seen a lot of trailer sway and flex too lol. Don't fear it.... But make sure you RESPECT it!! You'll do alright, and never let your guard down. Be safe out there. Ears open, eyes peeled, and hold it between the ditches.
