I agree. Whether the state goofed on the permit or not, it is still the driver's responsibility to read the permit and make sure things like the the date, the dims, the routing, license plate and truck number...etc are all correct BEFORE leaving out.
I made that mistake once...in a rush to get out of Denver before the metro curfew, I ran up 76 and hit the scale only to have it pointed out by the scalemaster that my permit was not valid until the next day. They didn't write me a ticket, but I had to leave the trailer there until after midnight.Dye Guardian, shortcut, Chewy352 and 2 others Thank this. -
Yep, kinda like my deal here with Va. 115k or more a super load. Even though I am on 8 axles.. ordered permit Tues. Morning and still waiting. Did not exceed 50 on a tridem either but their funky rules

this story of being pulled off route by authorities reminded me of this incident back in 2000. It changed the way the CHP operated in CA while escorting big loads. Just for your reading pleasure.

I have the entire report, 63 pages, book form, that was give to me by my old pilot car guy. Have no idea how he got it.Ruthless, Oxbow, passingthru69 and 1 other person Thank this. -
The trick with Va. Is to not exceed 13000 on steer. Even on super load. And you will have it in one day. I have done 150,000 on 8 and had permit in less than 24 hrs.Dye Guardian, Heavy Hammer, Oxbow and 2 others Thank this.

A few people already eluded to this but.... If a cop asked a driver to deviate from a route prescribed by DOT, he MUST NOT move. Police officers are law enforcement, not law makers. Cops don't know weight limits or bridge nights for every road so NO COPS WILL EVER take you off route. If they do, they are liable for any damage. I had one CHP try it when I blew past Banning. He chased me down and wanted me to go under I-10 back to the scale... LOL, the underpass is 15'6" (I was 16'10" high).
Ruthless, truckdad and passingthru69 Thank this. -
Varies by state.

How is that? If a cop tells me to break the law, I'm not doing it. They are law "enforcement" not law makers. Trust me, I've been in this situation a few times and I would never go off route just because a cop tells me to. I have done it when a cop says "the road is closed, you have to turn here, etc..." but ONLY because it gets me home quicker, but why would I break the law just to be forced to go get a ticket back at the scale?
