I am in truck driving school and had the DOT physical yesterday. I pass all the test for the physical the only problem is that they test and found out that I have diabetes. My blood sugar level was at 300 that they test me both times. This made the doctor gave me a medical hold so I can get this problem fix. How affected is the diabetes pills? I would think that having diabetes would be a problem while being a truck driver. What do you think about it?

Just find a diabetes doc. that treats it for a living an get a real test done, doc. gives you a dose of sug. and ck how long your body takes to handle it, then doc can get you on pill and sign off the ok form and you may retake new phy. with doc note that you are now under control, going around with your level that hi can lead to a unhappy feeling of having to pee alot and if not treated can be bad as you get older.

As long as you can manage it with medicine and not insulin you can drive. However this needs to be handled. My daughter has TYPE 1 so she is insulin dependent . Diabetes is nothing to fool with. Good luck to you.

Was that a fasting blood sugar level. or had you just ate breakfast?

I find it odd that a doctor will diagnose you as diabetic based on a couple blood sugar levels

I have type 2 diabetes. To be diagnosed with diabetes, you need to have an A1C level above 7.0 two times in a row. The A1C tests were given three months apart and you need to be fasting (first thing in the morning before eating anything)

I don't have a CDL, but I still need to get a doctors approval once a year that my diabetes is controlled by medication to keep my license

Im diabetic and I drive. There are several pills they can put you on. I take 2 pills. It is not a huge issue, if you take your meds and control your sugar. No more eating garbage. You can still eat stuff like pork chops, but eat veggies with it. Your doc will go over all that with you, but it is very possible to manage and drive, but you have to put in a bit of effort too.
