If I can find the verbiage I'll post it but to paraphrase you can't deviate from your prescribed route unless directed to do so by a law enforcement officer. They have the authority to do so and trust me you won't win in court. This is in Ohio I cannot speak for other states. I asked a question earlier that was ignored, if the pull you over on the side of the road and void your permit what do you do?
BS story?

Here you go,
Paragraph 3) "No person shall violate the terms of a permit issued under this section that relate to an approved route except upon order of a law enforcement officer or authorized agent of the issuing authority"
And "However, a permit is not voidable for operation in violation of a route provision of a permit if the operation is upon the order of a law enforcement officer"
An officer of the law has the authority to take you off route, they assume the responsibility for doing so. This is right from the Ohio revised code section 4513.34 that is the LAW so doing so is not illegal.kylefitzy, TripleSix, snowman_w900 and 4 others Thank this. -
Sounds good officer... I'll turn around and follow you back to the coops. Oh, officer, by the way, when I knock that bridge down because Im a foot too tall or I'm 200K over the weight limit to go over the other one. ... Will you be accepting the liability for that or will it be me???? Oh, its MY LIABILITY? Well then officer, I'm refusing to knock down that bridge or do half a million dollars worth of damage to my load... Sir, you are in over your head, unless you have the routing database in your car, Im not trusting your judgment. Write me a ticket RIGHT HERE or take me to jail.
They usually back off of their power trip at that point.Cottonmouth85 Thanks this. -
