I've driven some really hairy conditions for CPM rates and I won't do it again unless it's a mistake. Fortunately, my company will pay me $75 a day to shut down for bad weather with no questions asked. We rarely GET that $75, because it's rare to be shut down for 24 hours. But I'll take a bad day on the books over driving in truly SCARY weather every time.
Western passes aren't usually a big deal. Drive in Mass or NH after a nasty ice-stprm? That truly IS a big deal. -To me, anyway.BUMBACLADWAR Thanks this. -

Blewitt, White and Stevens passes are things I mercifully almost never have to deal with. Those suckers are nightmare driving ALL winter long, pretty much. And if you're LTL, I understand the urgency on both sides. Sitting for 15 hours in a day-cab sucks pretty much BARE. (Beyond All Reasonable Expectation).
BUMBACLADWAR and JReding Thank this. -
The bad part is where you take out a motorist and his/her family. I have met up with ex-drivers who were working the docks and or forklifts, and if they had it to do over again, they would not have done what they did, wiping out a bunch of people by driving under horrible weather conditions.
But ya' got to "get er' done", right?.Wait until the family of the dead, that you killed, sues your arse off and you will be singing a different song, friend.BUMBACLADWAR Thanks this. -
One of the drawbacks is that your top speed is only 20 mph, per manufacturer specs, whereas chains are good up to 30-35 mph.
Personally, I would only use the socks for general highway use, and continue to use chains on the pass. -
spyder7723, cnsper and JReding Thank this.
