Any advice? Wife wants to go with me, just as rider not a team driver. Empty nesters looking to hit the road but still want to make some cash!
Looking to go with Schneider.

What advice are you looking for? Do you want to be a company driver? An IC? Dedicated account? Regional or OTR? Where abouts do you live? This will impact what opportunities may be available to you

Savannah GA is a pretty good place to be. Schneider has a facility there and does some cross dock and cartage. There's usually not much of a problem getting in and out, and they have (or used to have) a dedicated account at the Target DC. There's also a Home Depot DC there as well and we do a good bit of business with them.
Jump on in.....the water's fine. As far as bringing your wife along, I believe all you would need to do is purchase some additional insurance for her........something like $10 a month or somesuch. Training would probably be in Atlanta, so you could easily drive there and go home on the weekend.
Need to get your CDL. I recommend Tech Colleges rather than a truck driving school.
Good luck and stay in touch.BlissFamilyTrucking and gentleroger Thank this. -
Read these threads and you'll see we're the wrong group to take advice from.
u4icwargasm, scythe08, gentleroger and 2 others Thank this. -
@TennMan - I told you to stick a finger in there, not your foot. Can't blame us if you can't listen well.
To the OP, we're not the best, not the worst. It all depends on what you're looking for. If you want to drive truck to "see the country" then SNI isn't for you. If you're looking for a decent paying gig that lets you spend time with the MRS, then it'll work out fine.
As @Opus said, community college for schooling, then read thru DFOs thread and Waggledaddys thread.MilitaryVet, SingingWolf, 91B20H8 and 1 other person Thank this. -
No APU
Truck will not idle below 70 degrees
Weird speed limiter settings
OTR pay is not great, some accounts pay decent
Silly rules (some you can ignore)
Some good terminals
Lots of drop & hook
Equipment is improving
In Savannah, I would look into intermodal- pay is decent but it's not OTR, if that's what you're looking for. -
I paint the ugliest picture so when I'm gone it'll be a masterpiece.
91B20H8 Thanks this. -
I was actually at the tank wash a block away from the savanna intermediate yard. It looked nice and there were a ton of tankers over at the quala wash. you have a ton of options
BlissFamilyTrucking Thanks this. -
I would not want to be OTR in a stripped Freightshaker with no APU and stupid idle settings. Especially not for what Schneider pays.
NopeWestern flyer, Florida Playboy and milehunter43 Thank this. -
If I went back OTR with a rider I wouldn't sign on anywhere without an apu and inverter, and would probably want a refrigerator. I'm with Schneider, but I only work 3 days per week so I don't mind the lack of amenities.
Western flyer Thanks this.
