Wow. This just boggles the mind. Are you really going to do this or just thinking? You mention a mentor, he or she recommends you place real money at risk even though you "know next to nothing about trucking"? I know next to nothing about nuero-surgery, would you want me to operate on your brain?

Have fun competing with Swift, CRE, and all the other megas..... They get corporate welfare, you don't.
snowman_w900 Thanks this. -
I call that bet and raise you 44%. I think most real o/o's on here know quite well what it takes, but don't have time nor care to give away what they learned the hard way to someone who woke up this morning and just decided owning a trucking company would be a cool thing to do.snowman_w900, Old Man, fordconvert and 3 others Thank this.

Well. I agree Clyde, many know a lot about how to get credit and won't explain it because most time it is a way to drive rates down by desperate people who need to make payments.
Credit is very easy to get and even more easier to abuse. One of the biggest problems with this approach is that you need good habits to avoid screwing yourself into the ground.
Credit is only good when you need it, which isn't when you start up the company.
There is a lot more to this as a hands off owner, those who are owner operators don't even approach it as a fleet owner.
The op is setting themselves up to fail, they missed the most important lesson on how to start it up, learn the business first.Oscar the KW and Ruthless Thank this. -
Experienced trucking operations are going out of business every day because of this lousy freight market we have going...somebody with no experience is going to just jump in and succeed where highly experienced people are failing? Good luck with that!

Was your mentor by any chance a mentor at swift at one time. I'm sure he knows exactly what he's talking about
bluerider Thanks this. -
Thank you for the response. Have set up two businesses previously and am still running one of them so I know how to get it started.
As for the rest of the questions, my mentor has 3 trucks and has been operating for 18 months and has made a significant profit. That is why I am entering the business.
I am not going to drive the truck because I already have a job. -
To answer the original question... I prefer Petes. But... What kind of freight is your mentor pulling and what kind of frieght are you looking to pull?
And does your mentor have direct customers or is he trolling the spot market? Has your mentor pounded the pavement or did he also just decide to buy some equipment and put some steering wheel holders behind the wheel? I only ask as what has/is working for him may not grace you with the same success. -
Thank you for this info

This 'mentor' thing is a red flag. Unless your 'mentor' is going to finance you, don't listen to a single word they say, starting with the 'significant profit' they've earned over the past 18 months with 3 trucks.
